I'm not sure but for some reason I am thinking the 86 and earlier had THICKER mounting ears. Perhaps I'll be corrected....

I'm not sure why the 94-04 struts are longer but I'm guessing the specs on distance between the shock tower and the spindle are longer than the foxes. If your SN95 is lowered you can gain some bump travel by using fox struts/shocks. All MM spec Bilstein shock/struts are fox spec as MM assumes any one using that combo will already be lowered.

The spindles on '86 and older cars as well as '87-93 4-cyl cars had thicker mounting pad that '87-93 V8 struts won't fit over.
