I don't think this is an ON3-specific issue, but rather a front-mount turbo problem. I took the car for it's first long drive and really romped on it. When I came to a stop light I started to smell a little coolant and then a cloud of steam came from under my hood. I checked my gauge and temperature was normal. I immediately pulled over to investigate. Coolant was all over the underside of the hood and the overflow tank was bubbling/boiling. I let it cool down for a minute or two. When I fired it up and let it idle ... everything as normal with no leaks.

Another buddy running an ON3 system has the same exact problem. Normal engine temps but the overflow cap sprays coolant after a hard run. He thought it might be head gasket leaks pressurizing the cooling system but it only does it after a longer hard run. Leaking head gasket would do so once it warmed up. The turbo is located so close to the tank it's gott be cooking it.

Has anyone else encountered this and did relocating your coolant overlow solve the issue? I bought a blanket but it won't fit because of the tight clearance to my Meziere Electric water pump.

Put some reflective tape on the overflow tank maybe? Try cutting out the section of blanket that touches your pump so it fits.... add some Redline Water Wetter... I have the same WP so I guess I will have that issue as well with a Turbo blanket.

do you still have the stock radiator/resevior? Im not sure if they make stiffer caps for those or not. In my car running a totally different setup, but with an aluminum aftermarket radiator, I used a 22 lbs cap and stopped pushing water

Stock cap is like 13lbs right? Anyone know if compatible and stiffer caps can be bought at Autozone, NAPA etc.?

I agree with some of the above comments.


Put a turbo blanket on it if you don't already have one, and put some reflective tape on the bottom side of the tank.

I f you and your buddy are both running stock head gaskets/bolts I'd get some of this:

NAPA AUTO PARTS

Because my guess is you're lifting the heads under boost.

I have ARP studs. I seriously doubt it's lifting the heads cause otherwise it would do that even on short runs like on the dyno. It only did it after a long country romping. Well, it was 108 here today ... so I'm going to find a way to make this turbo blanket fit and try to relocate the overflow.

It would be more obvious probably if it were a head gasket, yes. Try getting a rad cap for a navigator or a v10 truck I would think would work better since they're bigger and are more demanding on their cooling systems than a car would be. Try and get one off a crown vic with the heavy duty cooling system you know the interceptor package, I believe their caps are 21 psi.

Not really. A short dyno run is much less load than a long country romping. Seriously doubt it's boiling in the over flow and not melting the overflow itself. Lifted heads don't always overheat coolant. Be careful w stiff caps, they will split the end tanks on the radiator if it's copper or plastic.

My buddie had a 4.3L S-10 that had brown thin mud for coolant lol it over heated and we took the overflow cap off and it looked like chocolate milk boiling in there, so the liquid can boil without melting the overflow itself ......

It was more than likely exhuast gas coming through the cooling system than actually boiling. But even then, boiling it from the inside of the block and passing it into the over flow is much different than cooking an over flow enough to boil its contents. That requires much more heat.
