Hi everyone I’m new on here but have used the site for info throughout the yrs. I am looking for some real world insight and personal experience here. A little car info and back story for y’all. I have a 88 coupe street/ track car, stock 93 cobra motor just with a carb on it, MM CC plates, MM front coilovers, 01 IRS with full delrin and cross axis kit and eibach rear sway. So the car handles quite well and isn’t that powerful by today’s standards.
Last weekend after about 4.5 hrs of track time at Palmer motor sports park my trans decided to end its life. I was in 3rd climbing the hill and then it said goodbye. No warning nothing. It didn’t grind going into gears anywhere. It was actually a good trans. And yes I do rev match every down shift.
This brings me here. What are the trans that you guys run I don’t want to keep blowing up wc t5’s. I thought about a tko but my buddies wasn’t very smooth in high rpm range. T56 is meh in my opinion. I have scene that g force makes kits and that Astro does as well. Anyone have experience, info, or insight on the matter? Thanks for the help Chad.

How many T5’s have you actually blown up with that engine.

This is the first trans I have blown up. But I also just finished building the car this year and have only done two track days before it blew. I just don’t know what road race guys do for transmissions and if it’s common for them to blow like it did. So trying to get some help. Thanks

Many are getting by with T5s, even with power levels considerably higher than yours. Big difference between drag racing and road racing on the shock absorbed by the driveline. I have to wonder how many miles, and what kind of shape your transmission was in to begin with? With wear, clearances grow, and leave the transmission vulnerable. I'd get your tranny rebuilt by a reputable shop if the case is salvageable.

The Astro Performance A5 or GForce T5 can handle a bit more abuse and will give you room to grow when you decide you need more power. For road racing, you REALLY want the 0.8 5th gear if you run on any long tracks.

T5 with a .8 5th should be more than adequate. Shifts with a good hand / foot alignment will allow the tranny to live a long life

Thank you everyone for the input so far. I took the trans out of the car and upon inspection the input shaft bearing is bad. The shaft has a lot of play in all directions and the input shaft drive gear is what got destroyed. So more than likely just an old trans was my issue. So I’m going to get a normal rebuild done and see how that goes for now. Here’s a pic of the destruction.
