I have an 86 mustang. Drag race only. Trying to figure out if I should ditch the converter I have now and get a custom deal.

358 CI Windsor
RHS 215 heads ported
Victor JR
Race demon 750
Solid roller
11.2:1 compression
C4
3.73
28x9 radial
Estimate 500-530 hp NA

Looking to spray 100-200 shot on the motor once it’s dialed in.

The converter is a B&M holeshot nitrous 3600 stall. I’m thinking on the motor it’ll be lazy but with spray it should stall somewhere in the 4500 range? I also have a transbrake.

Call a few converter builders.. find one you want to work with and who wants to work with you.. your budget... your goals.

the correct converter will make or break a combo!

i only work with protorque at this point! joe is the man!

Every converter builder is different. Thus I suggest calling several. See if there's anyone local, saves a ton of shipping time/money in some cases.

Nitrous will throw a wrench into the vanes when choosing a converter, so make SURE to tell them you are going to spray. Yes it'll be tight on motor, will loosen up some on the sauce.

Even better, go to the track, find some Ford racers and ask them. One thing I learned long ago was that a Chevy engine guy can't build a converter for a Ford powered car. Well they can but finding a builder who knows Ford's usually nets better results

And finally, if you have someone put something together for you and it works exactly like you want, consider yourself fortunate. It's almost rare to get one done right the first time. "Right" is subjective...many of us shop on a budget, and that's perfectly fine. Keep in mind that with converters, "usually" the more you spend, the better quality product you'll get. A good converter is going to be close to $1000, maybe more nowadays. Been a month of Sunday's since I've bought any.

good is a bit subjective... a good converter for us is over 5k.

good for the one going in my car is going to be close to 2K

good for 75% of the people out there is going to be near 1K

like already stated call multiple places and speak to each. Your converter builder is like your doctor...dont lie and get as many specs as you can.

If you have timeslips of what the car is currently doing, any datalogs from making passes will go a long way in providing relevant information. Vehicle weight, tire, gear and on and on and on.

Interesting. I don't remember the last time I bought one, but now I feel old.
yea the transmission and converter market has really started booming the last few years. its not hard to spend 30K on a trans and converter these days

if you are going to use nitrous choosing a converter is a lot easier than if you are n/a, and most especially if it's an n/a footbrake car.

Typically if you are on a $1000 or less budget a low stall 8" converter will do good with nitrous. It will be fairly tight motor only and give a good flash on nitrous, yet couple on the big end to get the most mph.

I would do a little research, maybe call B&M and ask them what kind of stator that converter has in it, and if the stator will handle what you are planning on doing.

if you can make a name for yourself like rossler M&M or pro-formance the money is there

I believe they rate these converters to 650hp. I may just give edge racing converters a call and see what they say. They are reasonably priced.

I did. Stayed local. The problem is that people don't want to pay for good stuff, AND people don't like others to make any money, jealousy or whatever....I don't know. Money's not everything, and I'm not the type that likes a lot of attention either. Working out of the garage just doing small garage stuff...and honestly, there is so much work that I could really blow up, but don't want to. Simplified living is a whole lot less stressful-which is important at this point in life. The "fame days" (as the old lady calls it) are over.

In this area, there has been a trend toward taking your stuff to "the little guy" here. My uncle-in-law is a professional handyman, that's all he does....and could very easily work every minute of every day of every year and still have people blowing the phone up. You'd be surprised how many people can't or don't want to change a light bulb.
