Currently, I've got a Pro 5.0 base (which I'm happy with) and a Steeda Tri-ax handle.

Once I'm strapped in, I can uncomfortably reach 3rd and 5th. I'm going to miss shifts because of the fully extended right arm....

So, I searched and came up with this thread but most of the pics are dead.

This set up is intriguing, but I just don't want to hack up my center console...

I also found this, made by Steeda and wonder if it will give me some extra length, but I'm not sure it will fit the Pro 5.0 base.

I need to move the shift handle back and wouldn't mind a tall delrin shift knob simliar to this, but the extra height isn't going to do much good unless I can move the shifter to the left and back or at least back.

Any ideas? Have you guys home brewed something that might work?

If you can still find a Steeda Comfort Pro handle, get it. But they recently stopped making them because too many people don't realize the value of a long handle placed close to the driver.

Any idea on how close the steeda shifter moves the shifter towards the driver? For some reason, 2" back and 1" closer to the driver is sticking out in my mind. I really want to move my shifter back as well. I'm tempted to have someone at work bend me up a replacement out of some crap steel, and then thread it and bolt it on.

Check the last page of these shifter handles. I use the HN1010B with a Pro5.0 base but it's something you need to try or at least mock it up. Too far back and your elbow hits the seat bolster.

That's about right. Don't forget higher up too. You can see the difference in these two vids.

I also have a Pro 5.0 shifter and with the standard handle I had to literally lean forward to reach 3rd and 5th (seriously dangerous, I had to leave my harness loose to be able to drive). I put the Agent 47 handle on my Pro 5.0 base and I can strap completely in tight and easily reach all gears. The handle's pretty expensive but it works perfectly for me so it was worth the price, here's the link for it: A47 Racing Carbon Fiber Shifter Arm

I'd love to post pics but no one can explain why I'm only not able to post pics on the road racing/autox forum but can post to any of the other forums on this site. Their site has pics but it is of the SN95 car not the Fox which apparently would work for the OP since he has a '96. BTW, the Bullitt shift knob I had didn't work (the threads were too deep into the knob for the handle), I tried the Hurst pistol grip but didn't like it (made the whole assembly too tall), I ended up with the hurst black ball knob and it's a good setup.

i have this handle and LOVE IT! It took months of trial and error but after i found this setup (mgw ball knob on top) i stuck with it. I also bought a long reach shifter from Unique performance (same handle they used in the eleanor conversions) but havent been able to find a knob i like for it (plus the threads dont seem to work with the aftermarket knobs i have laying around).

Eventually i may just dig into the console and do a remote linkage like Bruce Griggs had on his track car...

what a thread to be started i was just going to pay the $$$ and get the agent 47, but now i don't know if i should pay so much. I have a MGW ontop of my T-56 setup, but i still have to reach for them gears

One of the things that I've been thinking about since starting to read this thread was also the reach from the steering wheel to the shifter. This is one of the things I noticed right away when I changed handles and got on track.

Not only does the handle put the shift knob further back but also up. In third gear, the shift knob I have know is at the same reach (forward) as the steering wheel and also at the 4 o'clock position of the wheel. I measured and from the side of the wheel to the side of the shift knob, it's a 6 3/4" gap shortened from about 10 1/2" including the extra forward reach.

Huge difference. I'm really surpised this topic doesn't come up more.

It does, but it gets posted in General Tech with the mind-numbing title of "BEST SHIFTER???????!??!?!?!?!?!" with absolutely no context given about usage or user height. And then begins the mad rush for everybody to name every shifter maker under the sun, and proclaim the awesomeness that is MGW. While it's a great shifter, it still doesn't place the ball where it needs to be for best ease of use. Most people focus on shortest throw and shortest stick and get their jollies showing it off <snick snick snick> in parking lots.

I love my Hurst shifter, but I'm old skool. Plus, I'm only 5'9" and I probably like to sit a bit closer to the steering wheel than some people, so I don't have problems bangin' gears like they are pr0n stars at Charlie Sheen's house.

Exactly what I mean, I did plenty of searching before I pulled the trigger on the A47 handle. I was contimplating the MGW shifter since it was only like $20 more but I searched around and tried asking those who had one if it stayed put and where the shift knob ended up. No responses. Since the A47 site clearly showed the differences, I took the gamble and it paid off.

I also laughed at the last part. Years ago just after I installed my 3550 I had some guy in another Fox roll up and do the snickity, snickity, snick at me at a stop light (I just assumed at the time that he was trying to get me to confirm that my car had a stick but maybe he was trying to show off). I wasn't about to shout out that my new trans doesn't make that noise because it ain't a T5 so just I rolled on.

Thanks for all the responses. I really like the Agent47 handle, but not the price.

I ordered a comfort pro handle from Lethal Performance since they had one list available for sale...

This should help move the shift handle BACK and it sounds like it is going to be higher too...I'd really like to get it "much" higher so that I spend only a little time between hands on the wheel and shifting. I've got a friend with a lathe and we might try to make a 4"-5" tall delrin knob to go on top of the comfort pro knob. I'll try to get some before and after pictures through the process...

If you look at the position of the Steeda shifter in my video, you'll see it's higher than the Hurst, and also higher than stock...and I mounted it in the lower of its two mounting positions. It's got three mounting holes in it, and you only use the upper one plus middle for the lower position, or middle plus lower one for the higher position. So it'll go an inch or so higher with no modifications.

I should also mention that my seat is an extra inch rearward than stock.

MFE-does your stock shift boot still fit all the way up to the knob?

Yes, but it might not in the higher position.

I spoke too soon, I guess they just drop ship...so I guess I'm looking for one used...bummer

Also, does anyone have a simple (homemade) idea of how I could get the same benefits of a comfort pro handle? I've just done some looking and it sounds like Steeda didn't make many of these handles...no other good options turned up on ebay either...

After being a hardcore Pro 5.0 nutswinger, I tried this Hurst shifter out since I couldn't reach the "upper" gears while being strapped in. I find it's one of the best shifters out there. Definitely a nice unit

It looks like we'll need some 3/8" steel/alum. scrap and the stock shift handle and either weld the handle on or bolt w/ loctite.

Anyone running a similar setup? I can't seem to find any of the Steeda Comfort Pro handles anymore....
