Hey guys, I got my car out to the track a few weekends ago and pulled off 3 13.4's around 102. I'm happy with its performance but its been a little goal of mine to get the car to run 12's without heads, suspension work, or stripping my interior, among other things. What do you guys think? Is it possible?

Heres my best Slip; and below that I'll list my Mods.

--1.914 60 Foot
--5.566 330 Ft
--8.610 1/8 Mile
--81.14 1/8 MPH
--11.218 1000Ft
--13.421 1/4
--101.96 MPH

Its a 1988 LX Coupe SD
-Full Exhaust= Ford Racing SS Shorty Headers, Mac Pro Chamber, DynoMax Ultra Flow Cat-Back.
-4.10 Gears
-Aluminum DriveShaft
-Frame Connectors
-K&N Panel Filter
-T Moss Ported Upper&Lower Intake
-1.7 Cobra RR
-Autospecialties Racing Crank pulley
-Deleted Smog, A/C & EGR
-Nitto Drag Radials 245/50 16's

Everything else is stock, throttle body, air box & tube, Crank Fan, ignition system, suspension. Also the car weights 3015 without me in it.

Lastly, if it means anything, I did these times at Lebanon Valley in NY. The day wasn't ideal conditions either, heres the weather off the bottom of my time slip.
Bar:29.20 (don't know what it is lol)
Temp: 91.4
Hum: 66% (Best of the day)
Calt: 3319 ( I don't know what this is either. I was told though that it's the calculated altitude as a result of weather conditions, but they could be wrong)

Anyway tell me what you guys think.....

Your 60's are killing you, you could possibly get down to the 1.6's and pick up 2-3 right there, the mph is good.. I think its definatly possible to pull a 12.99999....

A friend of mine runs [email protected] with 1.6 60'

Yea I think I can definatly improve on my 60's, but do you think 1.6's are possible on nittos?

probably, I pulled 1.8 60 on regular street tires

No mention of stick or auto. If it's a stick, you might try some different shift points and see if you can get any improvement.

The car is a Stick. I'm shifting the car around 50-52.

I want to shift out of 1st at 55 to drop it into the power ban better for 2nd but I think I'm getting valve float around 53-54. Also its going through the traps breaking up(or valve float, I think thats my problem at least) for the last 200-300 feet.

Anyway, a new tach is also in need as I don't really have a clue going off the stock one. I just figured out my RPM's going through the traps at 102 to be 5400(6000 on my stock tach). And I shift on my stock tach at about 55/56 every time which(Im not positive) but going by how much my tach is off when it says 6000 then I just assume I'm shifting out between 5000-5200...

5000-5200 RPM's for shifting seems awful low to me......move that up and see what happens.

Also.....get your 60's down. General rule of thumb, ever 0.100 seconds in the 60' is worth 0.300 seconds in the quarter.....so if you are going 13.40' with a 1.90 60', I high 1.7 60' shoudl put you in the 12's.

I'd put a set of slicks on it and launch it on the rev limiter. :)

Next time out I should have my valve float issues sorted out, along with a new tach so I'm defintaly going to work on my shift points... Although people tell me all the time I shouldn't need to rev into the mid 5's because my car with its current setup doesn't make much power after 5, I don't know though.

I might try a set of better drag radials in the future, but since I drive it to the track all the time slicks can wait, lol... I'm also to scared to break stuff since I don't have access to a trailer.

i had my car running 13.30's for a LONG time. then one night i went 12.98. i dont know if the track was prepped good or my launch was perfect but yes your car can easily be a 12 sec car with your mods.. just need to work on that 60 it looks like.

Great to see another F/S type stang from CT running at LVD!

Based on your post, I assume you have stock E7s. Most of the other upgrades you have allow the car to breath better. Unfortunately, stock E7s just don't breath well.

The good news is that you can make your car a consistent 12 second ride with the E7s. Some fairly simple machining can really improve their performance. My brother has a similar weight '89 LX with E7s and some similar performance parts. He has been 12.5 @ 107 on slicks. GT40 and GT40P heads are also popular upgrades.

Lastly, if it means anything, I did these times at Lebanon Valley in NY.
Calt: 3319 ( I don't know what this is either. I was told though that it's the calculated altitude as a result of weather conditions, but they could be wrong)
CALT = Calculated Altitude
This is a measure of the air quality, expressed in terms of altitude (distance above sea level). Basically speaking, it is a measure of air density. Simply put, the more oxygen you can force through the motor, the more power you will make. Air is less dense (i.e. less oxygen) at higher altitude. IIRC, LVD is something like 800-900 feet above sea level.

Similarly, heat and humidity also affect air quality. CALT takes all these factors into account and provides a representative "altitude" at the time of you pass. All told, the air was TERRIBLE when you ran. Just for fun, search for altitude correction factors to get a feel for how much the poor air was bringing your car down. It is armchair racing (mouse-button racing?) at its finest, but still a fun tool to help gauge your car's potential.

Good luck getting into the 12s!

Dump the drag radials for some slicks...

I'm the one Vista mentioned who went mid 12s with E7s... I had a similar set up as you, Cobra intake, exhaust, gears and went 13.0 @ 103. 12s are possible, just need traction and good driving. I think you could do it on the right day, with a good launch and some cool air (LVD has been pretty warm lately).

Sometimes everything is just perfect. I might also have to wait for better weather, so if your going to FFW at englishtown in October, then I'll see you there lol..... I do have to work on my 60's though. That was my third time ever at the track so I'm still feeling the car out at launch. I havn't been as aggressive as I should be, I guess you can say I get to nervous or scared, IDK alls I know is I get to the line and everything I plan on doing doesnt happen lol.....

06VistaGT--I've been looking into a set of those Thumper E7 Heads and I just might be getting a set within a month or so. Depends on the wallet really.... I looked into finding one of those calculators for armchair racing lol and found a pretty good one. http://www.wallaceracing.com/Calculators.htm the times seem pretty farfetched but I guess thats why its called what its called.

Brian 47---LVD is sucking latley, at least on saturdays. The day I was there this lady with a built chevelle was saying she was off about 4 tenths from a cool wednesday night. So I'm definatly looking forward to better weather.... It sounds stupid but I kind of gave myself stipulations for achieving my goal, and I wanted to try and get my best times on Nittos. Their not the best out there I know, But I think I can do it. I just need more practice..... Also, do you guys go up there alot? Maybe i'll see you up there some. The weathers been bad, and I can't imagine it any better for August but I'm going to be throwing in a new set of valve springs to fix my float issue(think its that at least) and was going to try and make it for the 9th of August...

get rid of those drag radials and get yourself a slick tire. Launch off the limiter and don't baby it and you should get there, or close.

a 1.70 60 foot will get you into the 12's.

You just need the tires to do it.

then watch your puny 28 splined axles take a poo along with your trans. you dont need full on slicks to go faster. thats just a band aid. start perfecting your launch. you dont need to buy more parts. you just need to learn to use the parts you have.

I think your shifting in the right area, remember a mostly stock 5.0 is making peak hp around 5k or less. I agree with getting a better tire and launching at diff rpm's to try and lower that 60ft. Also temp/humidity, ect play a big role

Don't bash it til you've tried it... ask the guys with 12 sec or close timeslips what kinda tires they use ... Al Renkal, Bob Cosby, Luke87GT, Brian47, and others... the stock 28 spline axles and stock T5 are just fine. Use a soft hitting clutch like the stock piece, FMS HD or King Cobra, or a Centerforce to avoid shocking the axles too hard. I had 200 passes on stock 28 spline axles and T5 launching off the limiter and powershifting every gear. I was using a Spec clutch, which finally twisted an axle tube (this is basically unheard of) ... the axles themselves were fine.

Thanks for the Advice... I'll definatly keep everyone posted...

I think so to, I've been shifting it by feel and it pulls hard up until I shift. On my stock tach it says 55-56... As youve probably read, but I don't think my revs are that high at all... I did the math on a calculator and figured out in 4th gear at the end of the track(trap speed 102) I was at 5400 but my tach read 6000 lol.
I want to try different radials but not slicks. I was thinking of maybe the Micky Thompson Drags, or Hoosiers. I want to make the best of my nittos for now though, maybe if I don't get it into the 12's the next couple times I'll give in for a better pair. The nittos still seem like they can be launched on harder. I only spun through first one pass and I blame that on bad track prep after an 03 cobra destroyed his IRS on the starting line... Like you said as well, the temp/humidty play a big role to so I think the next time out might be on a cool wednesday night......

Heres a video of my passes... Forgot I had these on youtube lol;)
2nd pass I missed 2nd....
4th pass was against my dad so I think thats why it ended up being my best pass of the day lol... Hes got a mild 408 with a road racing suspension.. Spinning all the way through first.
5th pass I somehow ended up missing 4th... My palms were sweaty:curses:

sweet incar vid. i guess your one of the lucky ones. i blew the spider gears apart and twisted the axle shafts on slicks with my car. so i built up my rearend and went with dr's.

i dont like the rear end floating around with biasply..

all im saying is this, the guy posted asking if his car that he has now as is can run 12's. he didnt ask hey what kinda parts or tires should i buy to make this combo a 12 second one. he asked how he can make what he has get into the 12's. and IMO he needs to work on the driving skills a bit before starts modding his car anymore. as he stated above he has only been to the track a few times. he should work on launches and tire pressures and other odds and ends. BUT TO EACH HIS OWN :)
