I have Weld Draglites... Do I NEED long wheel studs? My factory-length studs protrude just past the outer face of the wheel.

yes , you need at least 2x the diameter of the stud past the wheel. If you think about it you really won't have much of the lugnut supported if you don't

With the shank style lugnuts used with those wheels there is actually pretty good thread engagement, however to pass tech the NHRA rule book states that wheel studs must be threaded into the hex portion of the lug nut a distance at least equal to the diameter of the stud.
