Hello everyone,
I think I just blew my motor in my car. I have to pull it apart to confirm, might just be a lifter. I bought the 306 cheap and used, so I could spend good money on trans, suspension and other supporting mods. My plan was to get this combo tested and tuned and learn how to drive it on low power, then during winter with tax money, and Xmas bonus build myself a dart block based 302. Well right now I can’t afford a dart block, and the motor didn’t last the 6 months I was hoping on, so was thinking about switching to a 351 based block because they hold more power (sometimes wish I did this first).
So I was wondering what kind of things I would need to do to the on3 turbo kit, and to the rest of the car for that matter to make the 351 fit? I have searched and I am compiling different opinions and experiences, but I also wanted to pose this question to see if anyone has done the exact swap as I am thinking of, unless it’s never been done because it doesn’t make sense to. My thought is at my power level now I should be in a dart block or equivalent, so maybe it’s much cheaper to buy a freshly built 351 or used 351 and mod the kit to fit. I might be asking a dumb question, so if I am be easy on me, I am crushed by my car being down, I just finished a 6-8 month project and only ran her once at the track, and was about to drop her off to get lower gears put in and run her again, and then a machine gun went off in my motor!. That does weird things to a man.. :livid:

On3 told me that the only things you need to change from the 302 kit when going to a 351 is the down pipe and the crossover pipe. Both of which can be easily modified by a local exhaust shop.

I like you setup man! You have a VERY similar setup to me. Even making very close same power. I was thinking about the explorer short block I can get one for free. How long have you had it with boost? DO you beat on it often? Do you know what else I would need to swap to a 351? Will all my things like heads, and cam, alt, PS pump and intake move over?

Mine is pretty much beat on constantly. I've only been averaging about 8 MPG average out of a tank because of it.

Mine's only been together since February.

Everything but intake, distributor, and oil pan will swap over. You will however need 351 swap brackets for your accessories.

This is a pm I sent to Chad (on3) and his response.

I have your turbo kit on my '90 convertible with a 302.

If I put a 351w in it what would have to change on the turbo kit? You sell a 351 setup, are most of the parts the same as the 302? Could I buy just the parts that are different?

Thanks.

Re: 302 kit compared to 351 kit.
They are just completely different kits, headers, crossover, downpipe, pretty sure we changed the i/c tubing a little even

We did this on 89gt. Very easy fix just widen crossover and lengthen dp a bit. We made the 351 distributor work by transplanting the 302 guts to it. We even used stock lower and fabbed a simple box upper intake. Power steering and ac bracket were also easily modded to fit as well
