It's time to pick up some new wheels and some better rubber so I can start whoopin some serious ass at the track. Currently I'm looking at a staggered set of 17x9 front and 17x10.5 rear. Someone was telling me it would make it understeer bad if I had that much tire in the back...but I'm pretty sure that would only be the case if you drove like you had 315s all around.

Is anyone running a staggered setup like this? Any thoughts/recommendations?

I would honestly go with 275's all around so you could rotate tires.

But if you wanted to put 315s in the back you could always adjust over/understeer with an adjustable rear swaybar

If this is for the track then I would go 18". Better selection of race tires. I would get the widest wheels that will fit under the car.

Most DOT-R's are available in both 275/40-17 and 275/35-18 except Kumho V700 & V710 that's not offered in that 18" size. If anything, the 18" tires are slightly more expensive than the equivalent 17".

Another benefit of running the same size tire and rim on all four corners is spares. Some tires are directional or at least you want to run them directional. Carry an extra set of four tires and you only have one spare per corner with staggered rim sizes.

I would avoid stagger, just cause of rotate-ability and ditto for the spare set of wheels/tires.
You can dial in under/oversteer, but it just makes it harder with staggered tire sizes.

Personally, I went with 17x9-1/2" CCW wheels and 275-40-17 Hoosiers.
The wheels are extremely light, forged, and perfect fit for tires. Also less mass than equivalent in 18" (bigger wheel = more weight).


[edit]Tires are $50/tire cheaper than 18's brand new, and fit fine.
Yes, you can buy used race rubber from teams. Been there, done that. With the new cars i.e. Mustangs all running 18" wheels/tires, the 17's are no longer available and 18's are easier to find. [/edit]

Brand new 17's are typically cheaper. But what I think Earl is referring to with a wider selection of 18" race tires is that this size is a common race size and many teams and amateur racers offer their scrubs with 4-5 heat cycles and plenty of rubber left for pennies on the dollar. I have gotten two sets this way for 17's from T1 racers, but 17" scrubs are now becoming a rare find. They are almost as good as new, but make it considerably cheaper to run on R tires.

Unless you need to clear larger rotors/calipers, the 17's would be my choice. Already said, but IMHO, the 17's, w/less weight (w/same or better performance), less money = win, win. Oh, and same size, no stagger, for reasons stated.
