Putting my 302 together and have an oil pump from a 96 Explorer and also my stock Mustang pump from my 86. Took them apart to inspect and deburr as necessary and found this.

I’m 99% sure this is the pressure relief but what I don’t know is why one of them has the “rod” all the way out touching the casing, and the other one doesn’t. Any input here? I’m not upgrading oil pumps to aftermarket, I’m using one of these and they have identical part numbers.

housing on the one on the top looks like metal to metal wear. probably have a small sliver of metal keeping the valve stuck open.
