I assume you are looking for a GT, and ya the 98s are pigs unless they have the headswap. Get a 99 if you can. Not sure with 12,000 though. Maybe get a 98 and do the headswap. Which body style do you like better?

96-98 are not total pigs they just have crappy flowing heads on them. The best that I have ran stock in my '97 GT is 14.94's with crappy street tires. A friend of mine ran 14.53's in his '97 GT Stock!! If you do a headswap then you will easily be into the 13's!

found myself trying to make the same decision - I would definitely try to go with a 99+ GT. They are low 14 sec. cars and have 260 hp compared to a factory 225 hp in the '98.
It might tough to find one for $12K so I would suggest saving up some more - good luck

99+ Definitely

I think you should definitely go for the 99+. The heads are a big improvement over the 96-98. To give you an idea my GT has 25,000 miles on it right now and a dealer offered me 14,000 on trade in January when Ford had the 0%. (I was thinking about getting a Cobra, then I thought about rwepair bills when I broke stuff!!!!)

Just my $.02

I haven't seen a decent '99+ GT sell for $12,000 yet, maybe in a year or two. You could probably get a decent '96 GT and do the headswap for under $12,000. Or you could get a '94-'95 Cobra for under $12,000. There are options...

Mileage is decent and the price is pretty good. I would run a carfax on it and if it checks out clean. Not that keen of that color, but its in your budget range.

I think you would have to get lucky to find a 99GT for $12,000, but I think it can be done. I paid $14,500 for my 99 GT with 25,00 miles on it last August (the guy I bought it from was asking payoff, which would probably be around $12,000 now) Maybe you too could find a deal, although I thnk your chances would be a good bit better if you could go up to $13,000 or so.
