Well its not a Ford much less a Mustang
but figured I'd share my latest "quick" project with yall.
Most of the parts are here just waiting on few more.

Project: Turbo Tahoe .... or .... Holy Shyt We Just Got Spanked by That ?!?!

Bone stock 2002 5.3L Tahoe with 70,000 miles.

The 5.3L is really a kick ass little sleeper engine. Comes with aluminum heads that
flow with-in 1cfm of LS1 heads and has the unbreakable iron block Gen-III (LS) block.
They love some boost to shove air past the anemic "truck cam" and "truck intake"

At 11-12psi I should see over 500rwtq at 3,500rpm  .... and 425-450rwhp at 5,000-5,500rpm
(good for say 13.00 in the Qrt mile in a 5,000+lbs truck)

Engine is staying bone stock. Just putting some hotter 6.0L Escalade coil packs
on it and removing the mechanical fan for some late model OEM Tahoe E-fans.

Build is super simple. Nothing has to be moved, cut, trimmed or other wised
customized. TONS of room.

Stock driver side exhaust manifold into simple 2.5" crossover under trans.

Into 3" log header on pasngr side that I got from Trick Performance freak'n work of art.

3" down pipe into stock 3" cat back with Magnaflow 3" CAT for emissions.

Turbonetic 62-1 with .81 will come on line quick and should flow 12psi
no problem. Was going to use MP T-70 but went with the 62 for better spool
Picked it up local off the shelf for $850.

$100 ebay 27X12X3 intercooler fits perfect between bumper frame rails.
Just had to remove a plastic splash shield.

Fuel system will just be a high press. Walbro 255 in the tank and some
42 or 50 lbs injectors. Stock computer can be switched to straight SD set-up
and tuned and data logged with HPTuners software

Give yall a couple of assembly pics next week and then a dyno report.

That is an awesome project! :king: That's something I've thought of doing on my truck ('06 5.4L F-150), or the 4Runner we'll be getting in the near future. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread for your progress.

Good luck! :)

NICE! Going with a big single I see? What kind of timeline are you allowing for this project?
Very quick. Get all the supporting stuff like fuel pump and intercooler
mounting done this week, then fab up the downpipe and crossover next weekend.
That's all it will really.

I'm thinking of adding boost to mine (02' Tahoe LT) as well. If your VIN has "Z" as 8th letter, you have an E85 compatible fuel pump already which means it flows much more than the gas only pump. Hope this helps.

Joe Gibbs racing built a SC'd version of the Tahoe which may help you with researching the fuel system if it's still needed

Here's some math concerning the LS series

LQ9 (Escalade/Denali) 6.0 + L76 intake package + L92 heads + Crane Rllr cam = 539hp/452 lb ft on a stock bottom end!! 751/639 after adding a Magnusson high helix SC & alc injection ....still on the stock bottom end

I cannot emphasize enough how you shouldn't ever stomp the gas in the auto/awd mode with that weight and boost. This is the best thread I've seen in a while

Stage 3 Century Transmission rebuild for the 4L60E auto is on order already.

I can stomp on it all I want. Just a 2wd Tahoe too.
Maybe do a little brake boosting ..............
Trans is costing as much as the turbo build, but will hold the power with no worries
I also have "Tru-Cool" 40,000 gvw trans cooler going in too.

I have a high pressure Walbro pump already, which should support 500rwhp so
should be good to go. Lingenfilter sells nice little accessories and wire harnesses
to make the swap simple.

Sounds like it will be awesome and I guess my situation would be altogether different with the 4wd hardware in the way; mods to the exhaust would be pretty tough. Tranny upgrade sounds great. Are you worried about the rear end at all? They're a known weakness in the F- bodies. The Trick Performance package looks expensive albeit well thought out. Smart thinking to get the good deals where you can find them. Someone setting up a turbo system should be able to learn from this thread. I've found that the Australians have many people running LS engines with turbo's from the net

The BF Goodrich T/A "all terrain" tires should break loose and smoke before I break anything
in the axle. Maybe upgrade the differential and driveshaft in a few months.

Neat project. You going to put alk/water spray on it too? Might be worth it with the weight you gotta move. lol.

Cant wait to see the finished project, as well as the in-work pics. I have a 2000 expedition(wife wagon) and I wanna do something similar to it in the future.

I would find a used 2500/3500 transmission and transfer case and the front and rear diffs. You would be going from the 4l60/269 t case and 10 bolt rear to 4l80e/271 and 14bolt 11inch ring gear rear diff and 9.75 front diff. All easily findable at the salvage yard and most likely alot cheaper then the 4l60e upgrades and far more reliable. Plus all that stuff should be bolt in.

I was seriously considering doing the 4L80E swap but went with the built 4L60E.

Its not quite a bolt in on the Tahoe. Requires some customizing of cooler lines
wire harness, computer tune, drive shaft, x-member, ect ect.

It was a close call on which to do. The 4L60E was just going to be a lot less
headaches and down time which is a key factor since this is my DD.

Got the 40,000 gvw RV trans cooler mounted
Super easy to do, just screwed it to the hood latch frame
and spliced into the factory cooler lines running in and out
of the radiator.

Should keep heat in check with new 3,000 stall converter.

Intercooler is ready to mount, just need a couple of longer bolts.
Post a pic of it in place tomorrow.

Trimmed the front bumper and lined the hole with 5/32 vac hose to get good
airflow thru the I/C. Came out pretty "factory" looking if I say so myself.

Intercooler is mounted. Bolted to the radiator core support
Didn't even have to take the bumper off.

Painted it flat black to improve thermal efficiency too

Went and got a bone stock base line dyno pull today

205 rwhp and 214 rwtq.

Get the new trans and fuel pump installed this weekend
and maybe run some of the cold pipe up to the TB.

New built trans got installed today :D
Shifts nice and snappy now.

Got a stock y-pipe out of the junk yard and cut off the
ends to connect downpipe to stock cat-back and crossover to
stock driver manifold.

Tial 44mm wastegate came in too. Has 10psi spring in it now, but think
I'm going to go ahead and order the 13psi spring for it.
