I need to put a new steering rack in my 96 Cobra. Is there anything I need to look out for when taking off the old rack or installing the new one? Looks like there are two bolts to the K member, the tie rods to the spindles (will need a puller right?), 1 bolt that attaches to the steering shaft, and the two fluid lines connected to the rack. I will also be installing a MM steering shaft so any tips regarding that would be great too.

Thanks

You probably won't need a puller for the tie rod ends, just give the body of them a whack with a hammer. If you think you have to hit the threaded part, put the castle nut back on top of it to protect the threads.

The coupler to the steering shaft may be seized even after you remove the bolt and may take some persuasion.

Thanks, sounds easy enough...

I just found out that the dealers only option is a remanufactured one that has a different part number than the 03/04 Cobra. Do you guys think the remanufactured ones are to 03/04 Cobra specs? I'm not sure whether to go from the dealer and hope these remanufactured ones have the 03/04 quick ratio, or try to find a used one out of an actual 03/04 Cobra. My other option was a 00R rack that I found but the seller won't let it go for anything under $650...

They'll almost certainly have the right ratio, what they won't likely have is the same T-bar inside which affects how stiff the steering feels.

Well I ended up going through the dealer and gave them a vin # from an 03 Cobra. Got the remanufactured steering rack today and to my surprise, it had the 03/04 Cobra part number "SPR-ZM" marked on it. So I guess we'll see how it feels after I install it...
