yup. mine happened in the middle of a race while battling for the lead. went a little wide and got on the curbing. needless to say as soon as I got back to the pits I snipped the wires and bypassed it so it wouldn't happen next race.
I had mine trip when I went hard over a berm with huge gators. Perhaps the springs lose tension over time and they need to be replaced. I don't think I would want to go without it though. You don't want to be in a car that is on fire being fed gasoline at a rate of 3+ liters per minute.
Do you practice flipping the cutoff switch while blindfolded and timing yourself to get out of the car in 10 seconds or less? If your car is on fire and full of smoke, you may not be thinking about that manual switch.
Actually yes, I do practice getting out. I have it down to right around 4 seconds from completely strapped in, window net up, and hitting the switch. Now I have not tried it with my eyes closed, but that cant add more than a second or 2 which is still a good amount shy of the 10 seconds they recommend. I will try it without looking, but everything is within easy reach while I am seated so I don't see it being any more difficult. I agree with you about being safe, but if the thing trips every time I get a little wide coming out of a turn and costing me the race, its gotta go.
I'm not really a safety nazi, but fire scares the shat out of me.
I'm thinking of repositioning the inertia switch so that I can reset it while belted in. I think I'll get a new inertia switch too. I believe that over time, the springs in the switch may fatigue to allow a too easy switch trip.
