Help, The carrier bearings went out again. The
first time was at 19k and now again at 28k. The
wife and I were on vacation to the lakes in
minnesota this weekend. With about 60 miles left
on our trip, I started hearing a severe growl
coming out of the rearend. I stopped at a ford
dealer in Park Rapids,Mn. They said the carrier
bearing were shot and they didn't have the parts
to repair it. I had them reassemble it and took
a chance on getting back home 260 miles. I made
it home safely, but the rearend is really howling
now. It is still under warranty, but why should
it fail again? I have 2000 gt vert auto. The
car has never been drag raced and has the stock
rearend. I would appreciate and thougts and what
should I insist on when I take it into my local
ford dealer tomorrow?

I am at 13K and have had my rear rebuilt twice, and now it is whining again. The dealer is talking about replacing the whole rear housing. He said something about already doing it to another car. He also said some of the housings may have been machined wrong from the factory.

The first one may have gone due to trash in the housing. The second one may have gone because they didn't clean the trash out of the rear end when the replaced the bearings the first time. They need to remove the ring gear AND the pinion, check ALL the bearings, not just the carrier bearings, CLEAN the housing and axle tubes, then see if the backlash and preload can be set properly with the housing as is. I bet it can.

Also, check the ring and pinion for scoring. If you had to drive it with trashed bearings, chances are the ring and pinion are scored as well and will have to be replaced.

When they did mine the first time, they replaced eyerything in the center section. They put the 373's in at no charge because Ford makes a 373 ring and pinion for that rear end. I can't say if they got all of the trash out of the rear or not

Hey thanks for the replies. My ford mechanic
pulled the rearend apart today. He talked to
ford hotline. They agreed to replace the complete
rearend including axles. I am very happy.
