I just finished installing GT500 Brakes and Wheels on my Fox Body car.
I had the M-2300-K brakes and Cobra R calipers with 95 Cobra R Wheels.
The reason for the swap was to be able to use used Race tires from the Koni Challenge cars which use 275/35/18 Hoosiers.
I went with the Vintage Venom conversion kit and bought the Rims and Tires from Rehagen Racing. It came out great and my lap times at Grattan Raceway are down two seconds a lap due to the tires and the huge improvement in braking. Wow is all I can say! I thought the Cobra R stuff was good, holy smokes are these brakes easy to modulate.
email for a link to pictures on photo bucket, I can't post them here due to low number of posts.

Here's a link to the pics...I helped 89gt418w with the install.

I've seen the components in person and can attest to the quality of the kit. It's very well thought out, has a straightforward install and definitely performs. I've driven this car personally and I can attest to its performance as well. Consistent is a word that I would use to describe them. I've experienced fade with the Cobra brakes before and if there's any to be found with this kit, I've yet to experience it.

If someone is looking for a kit that provides a significant improvement in performance (especially on a fox with its lighter weight), it would be worth your time to check it out.

Any interference problems? I see your using the stock spring location and such, do you have alot of rubbing on tight turns? Any other fender mods? What did the brake kit and Vintage Venom kit run you?

Fenders and mods.

I have Mach1 lower control arms from Ford Racing, SN95 front bar, relocated control arm mounting points in the stock K-member, 96 and up front spindles, steeda ball joint and bump steer kit, Tokico Illumina struts, 12 inch 800 lb springs from Suspension Springs.

Front fenders have been cut behind the ground effects and pulled out about 1 to 2 inches and a piece welded in. Also I pulled the bottom front out to be flush with the tire.

With the Hoosier 275/35/18's one side slightly rubbed where it cleared before with the Cobra R wheels, I pulled the fender out by hand and it clears now. I think this is due to the rims being 9.5 inchs and the tires slightly larger than the 275/40/17's I ran before on 9 inch rims.

He was at Grattan with me in May. That car flies! Here is a picture from that day:

89GT418W, your car looks fantastic! Glad to hear you are as excited about the brakes as we are. We would also love to see some full car pics with the GT500 wheels. I think they are a good match to the Fox body style. With respect to fitment, I see you have the longer SN95 front arms. It looks like you've made them fit quite nicely and your fender mods look great. Our kit is designed to exactly replicate a 20mm wheel offset (like the 18x9.5x20mm wheels used on the 2000 Cobra-R) when the 45mm offset GT500 or equivalent wheels are used. In other words, with the stock Fox arms our kit places the 45mm offset GT500 wheel in the exact location of a 20mm offset wheel, which is an ideal offset for an 18x9.5 wheel on the Fox bodies as well as SN95 Mustangs.

jw33, yes 18" wheels are required. Any 18" with approximately 45mm offset (such as the actual GT500 wheel) and clearance for GT500 brakes works great.

MJ91GT, the full GT500 conversion kit sells for $395. Of course you will also need front calipers, rotors and hoses. There have been several GT500 front brake "take-offs" with basically zero miles on ebay selling for $700 to $800. Also, to generate some excitement we have put a few of our conversion kits on ebay with very low starting bids.

I need to take pictures....It's not my strong point...

Great kit, I used your kit on a 99 Cobra R Clone I'm building as well.
Why use the 00 Cobra R brakes when I can have the bigger rotors and calipers! I'm really looking forward to getting this car out this fall.
Now I just need to sell all the old brakes and wheels.

im running this setup currently and am in love with its feel... your telling me this setup is that much better? Also, how much heavier are the 18s than the 17s?

R.D. - I'm pretty sure I have some pics that I took when we were at Livernois a few weeks back. I can post one or two from that day if you like...let me know.

What are you looking to get for those wheels and brakes? I definately need a second set of 17X9s and a spare set of calipers wouldn't hurt.

I would say the improvement from the PBR's to the 00 R Brembos is the same as the improvement from the 00 R Brembos to the GT500 brakes. Rotor temps were cut in 1/2 using a non-contact pyrometer and my lap times at Grattan were down 2 seconds over my previous best on the same tire compound (Hoosiers). I was braking later than with the 00 R brakes and after 4 track days I have had no fading or knock back issues. Also, the pad life is great so far. I am using Performance Friction 97 pads. Rotors look great, no checking or cracking where with the 00 R brakes the rotors would absolutely be cracking after 4 track days. I have the same brake ducting set up, no change there (00 R set up).

I made the change to save money on tires and It appears I will save on Rotors and Pads as well so I am very pleased.

reviving this one..

I'm very interested in doing this swap on my 3000# '91 dual purpose car too but I have some questions if anybody can answer

1. I have Fox length control arms and rolled fender lips-I want to use the 18 x 9" 2000 Cobra R rim (with 255/35 series tires) that has 21 mm offset and 6.12" back spacing and looks to have decent spoke clearance. Will this fit?

2. I will be running 13" Baer rotors with their PBR caliper in the rear. What is a good MC/BB (cam yields 12 in vacuum) combo that will give good, easy to modulate feel on the race track and be livable on the street?

3. One of the big attractions to this swap is that on short courses I won't have to run ducting because of the lower rotor temps. Is this a fair assumption?

redb*tch (first of all, that is absolutely hilarious!),

Some great questions. Our thoughts:

1) Regarding wheels, we intentionally designed this conversion to put the GT500 wheels (18x9.5x45mm) in the exact position as the 2000 Cobra-R wheels (18.5x9x20mm). Our front spacer is exactly 24mm thick and the GT500 rotor has a 1 mm thicker hat than the 13" Cobra rotor providing the exact 25mm worth of spacing to accommodate for the 45mm offset GT500 wheels. So, if you use the 2000-R wheels with our GT500 conversion kit they will stick out 25mm further than they do now. On my '88 Fox I run the longer arms with the GT500 kit and the GT500 45mm offset wheels. It is a wide fit and my fenders are rolled and pulled out a bit. With your stock arms and lesser offset wheels you will be in about the same position as my car. Our new F14 package might be better for you if you want to maintain your current wheel fitment. It uses the same (awesome) GT500 front rotor and the same pad size as the GT500 however has Brembo Monobloc calipers and bolts directly to SN95 spindles with no spacers. We have a large shipment coming in on Monday in Black and will be offering free shipping on those. Regarding spoke clearance, the GT500 and F14 calipers protrude into the spokes by about the same amount as the 2000 Cobra-R caliper (a hair less actually). We have a template you can print out for the F14 package on our site at: http://www.vintage-venom.com/F14-Stage_II/F14-Stage_II_brake_sweep.pdf

2) With the larger '93 Cobra 205mm tandem booster we love the 1 1/16" master cylinder ('94/'95 GT) with either the GT500 or F14 front. It will be a good choice for your Baer rears as well. If you want to run your smaller Fox booster, the 1 1/16" will be great on the track but may be difficult to lock on the street. A more streetable choice would be a 1" master cylinder ('93 Cobra) with the smaller booster. You could always try the 1 1/16" m/c first and update the booster later if you feel the need.

3) Great question. We were honestly shocked at how much cooler the GT500 / F14 front brake was at the track. On my car I have removed the duct from one side and will be gathering temperature data at the track to see what the difference is. I suspect and hope that the ducts will no longer be needed (the Ram Air is welcomed back!).

Han Solo, the O.E. GT500 Brembo rotors are a bit over $100 each from the Ford dealer. The pads are available from many sources. We found them in the PFC "Z-Rated" compound for $101. The Ferodo HP1000 O.E. compound that comes with our calipers is available from the GM dealer pad kit # 89047725 and lists for $192 a set. If you can get a deal from GM you can get them for about $130 a set or find them in your favorite compound elsewhere.

pkstang, thanks! We are excited too. The calipers are made special for us by Brembo based off a high end production application.
