Well after 6 months 10 days and only 2,153 miles using Mobil 1, I had an oil analysis done.

Results:

Oil degradation:

% OXD 20.00
% NOX 22.86
TBN 9.88

Spectrographic Analysis (PPM)
Fe 21
Cr 2
Pb 2
Cu 4
Sn 1
Al 7
Ni 1
Ag 0
Mn 1
Si 26 (Had crank pulley keyway resealed)
B 39
Na 7
Mg 1227
Ca 670
Ba 0
P 1050
Zn 1344
Mo Ti,V,Cd 0

Physical Prop.
%water <0.05
%fuel <1.0
Viscosity @100c 10.4
%Solids TR

I am curious as to what some of you others have gotten for results.

Basically with the numbers it was probably ok to keep running it. The oil did look nasty and smelly nasty though.

This was mostly all short distance driving.

Thanks

I can't keep track of what blocks Ford deems should be iron or aluminum but it looks like you have an iron block with regular wear that still needs breaking in. That's a good P level.

Do yourself a favor and never use oil or fuel additives. Continue to use Mobil 1 for the life of your engine. Change the oil every 5000 km. Use decent oil filters...I don't care what everyone else says...I like the Fram doubleguard. Do NOT get oil filters with Teflon or other kind of "extra protection". If you do this, your engine should last you a long time.

Car is 2001 Cobra delivered in June 01 with 3 miles on it. Shifted to Mobil One at 8 miles with oil changed again at 300 & 1800 prior to the below.

Installed a bypass flow oil filter just after the above sample

Based on the high Potassium & Sodium I chose to change oil & filters after this sample and sample again in 2,000 miles. This bacause of a potential small coolant leak.

I thought you were supposed to wait on using synthetics until the rings or valves get seated - at whatever miles that is.Does that matter anymore??

That has been said. Based on my experience I see no reason to wait. Machining today is so well done that the old need for wear in is moot in my observation. Should there be a problem with the engine I'll post something. Note that the car above now has 12,000 miles on it so did it make a difference? I do not believe so and I had the benefit of synthetics from virtually the beginning.

esandes- Ya I don't use or believe in those snake oil stuff. 4.6L in th GT is an iron block

Oh ya the car had 20,389 miles on it. It was 5W-30.

IslandCobra - What weight oil where you running ? No Total Base Number with those tests ?

Just in case it is true that you should wait, I waited till 4,500 miles before switching, and that was with Castrol Syntec, which I found out here, after like 3 oil changes, that it is not made from a man-made base stock. I now use Mobil 1.

Thanks
