Has anyone ever tried using a stock sumped gas tank as a water tank for an air to water intercooler? My trunk is already crowded. I would use the factory filler neck, and add an extra bung at the sump for a drain.

That should work but water weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon. You would have to carry 20-30 pounds of water unless you boxed and sumped the tank. I did use a VW radiator. Now I converted to a 3 gallon plastic fuel cell on the back seat. I carry less than 16 lbs of ice water. Even if I don't use ice the water stays below 120F and I push a lot of air through it.

I used the spare tire well. Made bulkhead fitting to run the hoses out the back. Welded up all holes, then coated it, installed a pump, covered it and added a deck port.
