The only way you can ditch the air dam is by boxing the radiator. So, yep, you still need it with the Saleen air dam and an otherwise stock setup.

funny you say that i did fiberglass box the intercooler via the inlet on the bottom of the saleen airdamn. i think i will leave it on then!

I took off the ranger air dam when I put the Saleen piece on. I also boxed in the radiator with foam on the sides and aluminum sealing the bottom of the air dam to the rad support.

does your aluminum piece run the whole width of the front end or just the width of the radiator? Also, how did you attach it to the radiator support and front bumper?

It is as wide as the vertical foam pieces. It is attached to the factory air deflector location underneath the lower rad support and it sits above the lip of the air dam on the front. It works great.

how well does the foam stay in place? did you apply any type of adhesive to hold it up or is it just wedged in there between the bumper support and radiator?

Do you think foam is just as effective as using aluminum to create the radiator box?

I used spray glue to hold it to the rad support and left it a little big so when the headlight support goes back on it keeps in in place and seals it. Way easier that cutting alum. to the shape of the headlight support and bumper cover. It has held up fine for that last 4-5 years and 130+ mph.

that hollow Cobra grill must help a tad too

Yes, the cobra insert did help as well as the cut-out bumper. Even with 100 F+ it does not get over 215 F even though the car has functioning A/C.
