Buddys truck is throwing the following codes.

p0022, P0171, P0300<P0305, P0306< P0307, P0308 P0316, P2198

We think the cam phaser is bad.
Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this? I'm a Windsor engine guy. So the modular stuff is a little alien to me....

it probably has a phaser issue. how many miles? also if you get it up to operating temp, in gear barely off idle does it get a really good rattle? if so id check cam caps, if they are scored you are probably better off doing a complete engine.

Usually caused by 2 things, 1 is a bad actuator (part that sticks through the valve cover), this sends oil to the phaser, # 2 cause is a bad phaser, if the truck has been neglected they should both be changed, the other option is to simply lock out the phasers which is what most people do now, it is cheap, prevents noise and cures the problem, it does require a tune however to turn the light off, the lockouts can be purchased here:
