I have a short and I can't find it. I was told to connect the voltmeter in series between the negative bat cable and the negative bat termainal (leaving the pos. cable attached to the pos terminal). I did, and get a reading of 12.85 volts!! Is it possible I have short that is constantly drawing 12.85v??? Once I find an accurate method of measuring current draw, I can attempt to isolate the short... that's not so hard. Anyone have any advice for me??

i think thats the voltage for the battery, u need millivolts. get a 12volt test light, much easier. if ur drawing current (bad) it lights up. if it dont light up then good. if bad, start pulling fuses one at a time to c if the light goes out, that way u can isolate the curcuit. if none of the fuses cuts the light, then unplug the alt and c. hope this helps...

Test

Actually you need to do the first test. You need to be checking amps not volts though. Once you get the reading post it and we can continue to try and help you out.
