For those of you that will be attending this year's Woodward dream cruise, officials have announced that on Friday night Woodward will be closed and fresh asphalt laid for organized street drag racing. Last year they did this at the old silverdome parking lot. And drew 10,000 people. The track was bumpy. This should be world's better. So if you are coming for the dream cruise be sure to add this to your plans. They are even setting up bleachers for spectators. This is right in front of the new m1 Concourse development and they say that they will also be making an announcement of some kind of activities there.

That's great news, but how can they do this nowadays with all the "safety first " restrictions around. Insurance company's and lawyer's are going to have a field day with this one.

I'm not complaining at all, in fact I might make the drive just for this. It just surprises me that they can get the OK for this.

Unless the track is 60 ft long, then it makes sense. lol

It has been approved by both the county and mdot. Last year it was 1/8 mile and will most likely be the same this year.

GREAT !!! I've never been there,. Will they have limitations on tire choice, or is this strictly street tire / Drag Radial racing ?

I live next to Pontiac. They had concerns last year when they did this @the closed Pontiac Silverdome parking lot due to the conditions of the lot. This is a great alternative. It will be easier getting it through Pontiac City Council then it was to get MDOT approval for this. We have some big money influencing this with the m1 Concourse getting ready to open. And this event will most likely be tied into some events being planned there also. It is actually looking pretty promising. As more information comes about I will keep this updated. Keep your fingers crossed but as MFE said don't hold your breath we don't need anybody passing out. LOL

No news yet but just letting you know that I am staying on this. I have been doing some digging and regarding the chances of this happening, it is actually the planning committee that has the say. Last year it past with a 4-2 vote. The only real concern then was complaints about it being held in the parking lot of the closed and condemned silverdome parking lot and that the money paid for rental was going to the company that owns the property ( they gutted, stripped, and left it to rot). Other than that everyone thought it was a great idea. Pontiac is trying to rebuild and recover from the closing of the gm truck and bus plant, Pontiac assembly plant, and all of the smaller manufacturing plants that went with it. So they veiwed this as an opportunity. Let's just hope that after drawing over 10,000 people with only 3 weeks notice and literally No advertising that they feel the same way this year.

If you can sign up for this event, do it. I raced at the Roadkill Nights in Kansas City this past Saturday, it was a good time. Although you might get tired of hearing the phrase "Roadkill Nights, powered by Dodge!" by the end of the day.

Expect a slick track, especially on street tires like I was running.

How does a car fuel? They say no trailers. I don't like to carry gas in my car. I go through almost a gallon a pass and have a five gallon cell.

With 350 cars and if I remember correctly from last year it will be a 1 pass event and position awarded by time. It is restricted to street cars that are registered, insured, dot street tires, must have mufflers and be driven to and into the event. They don't want dedicated race car's. I hope that answers your question. I have a 15 gal cell in mine and only live about 10 miles from the event. But one thing about where they are doing it is if you are on pump fuel there is a gas station right across the street from the M1 concorse where they will be staging the event. Did you get registered tom?

Is this a timed drag race? I guess I should have asked.

Yes. Single pass, best time wins. It is being put on by roadkill. It is partial to Chrysler products. There are two classifications Chrysler and everyone else. The Chrysler purse is $19,000 with $10,000 going to first place Chrysler. All other class is $1,900 purse and $1,000 - 1st.

Nothing like a "little" bias to make an event a real winner. Lol It needs a new name. The "Chrysler Dream Cruise"

In all fairness to the dream cruise, they did not have anything to do with setting this up. It is put on by roadkill with Chrysler being there thing. I don't know if fca sponsors the event but dodge is a major sponsor to their website. I just hope that I run a better time than the Chrysler winner. Lol

OK tom, after getting more information I was wrong about format. This is how they did it in Kansas City .
All cars make a qualifying run.
Fastest 4 cars run a quick 4 format.
Every one of them must run against the other 3 cars.
5 points for a win and 3 points for a loss.
10 minutes cool down between runs.
Points added determines winner.
In case of a tie there will bea heads up race to determine winner.
So as I read the rules for the cars I don't see anything that says that I can't bring extra batteries and cables (so I can run my cooling fan and water pump to cool down between runs ) ten minutes is more than enough time to pull plenty of heat out. But I may just mount the extra battery to avoid any controversy. The added weight in the rear will help with the launch on a no prep surface also. At the Kansas event the top qualified Chrysler entry ran a 6.48 620 ft pass.

Good thinking on the battery. I plan on doing the same. I'm installing a second deep cycle that ONLY runs the fans and pumps for cooling. My car will pretty much fully cool in 5-10 minutes. I'm not sure how it would be in hot laps.

My car's main issue is fuel consumption. It can burn a gallon in ten minutes at idle or slow speeds.

I can kill that 6.48 on street legal tires. LOL
