I am in the market for some track tires. My car is primarily a track day car that sees some street. I just play and am not competitive. I run a square 275/40-17 setup. I intend to get a 100 TW set for the road course and 200 set for CAM T autocross and street. I have no experience with any of the current 275 tires in the 100 – 200 tread wear range I am looking at. I have run Pilot Sports on another car but they are pretty pricey for the track.

My old stand by tires were Kumho Victorracers and Dunlop Star Specs. Tell me your thoughts on these. I am leaning towards the Toyo R888 for the 100 TW set. I have heard from others that run them in differing sizes that these wear well and have good grip along with solid feedback. I have no idea about the current set of 200 tread wear tires.

Autocross Tires:

Pilot Sport (220 Tread Wear) stupid expensive
Nito NT05 (200 TW)
Falken Azenis RT615K (200 TW)
Toyo Proxes R1R (200 TW)

Road Course Tires:

Toyo Proxes R888 (100 TW)
Toyo Proxes RA 1 (100 TW)
Nitto NT01 (100 TW)

Can't say about the 100 wear tires, but last year a great number of A/Xers recommended the Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R Bridgestone#Potenza RE-71R. Unfortunately, Bridgestone didn't make the tire in my size so I went with the Rival S. Doesn't look like they have a 275/17 this year either; you'd have to move to an 18" wheel. And, no experience with the Rival S since the car is still being finished-up since the soup-to-nuts redo last year.

I run the same size tire setup on my car.

I've ran the R1R's and the Kumho XS on track. I liked the R1R's better than the Kumho's but the Kumho's were 3 years old at the time so I'm not sure if its a fair comparison.

I run the RA1's now but I have never run any other set of DOT track tires. I know its not much help but the RA1's stick very well and seem to last a very long time for a DOT track tire.

Yeah, the RE71 and Rival S are the #### according to GM. Unfortunately they don't make my size.

I think the RA-1s would probably be the best track tires if you're not worrying about being the fastest guy on the track. They have a well-earned reputation for lasting a long time, and maintaining their performance throughout their life. (I've actually never used them myself, but have run events with guys who do, and have read plenty of positive comments about them over the years on various forums.) I think the NT01s are the fastest of the 3, if that matters.

I can't speak to the auto-x options, as I haven't run any of them. I expect for auto-x use the Michelin would be out-classed by the others, which are all dedicated "cheater" 200TW tires pretty much specifically designed for auto-x.

I have been thru probably a dozen sets of the Nitto NT05s in the 275/40-17 and find them to be a good performer and a good value.

I wish i had more input through testing but im a slick rookie, just mounted 275/35/18 on my 18x10 wheels, (nitto NT01) and they are matched perfectly i cannot wait to hit the atuox/track

Ive always liked nitto, ive had the NT05 and liked them, iam currectly using the NT555 for the street and they are good, i can still bake the 275s but i also feel pretty confident about "spirited" drives around corners.

I ran 275/35-18 R888 and they have great straight line grip, but you can feel them roll over more in the corners. The sidewall is not as sturdy as an NT01. I only run NT01's and RC-1's so I can't add too much other first hand info. And both the tires are more about lap times than longevity. But I get maybe one more weekend out of the NT01's compared to the RC-1's. Nt01's also respond better to heat compared to the RC-1. But shipped the RC-1's are cheaper than NT01's.

I wouldn't bother with a separate 100TW set, not enough performance difference for what you're doing, IMO. We've run the Falkens on our ChumpCar Camaro and they have good grip and hold up nicely on a heavy car. We currently have Rivals fitted and like them better, but they stop at 255 width as you've seen.

I just finished looking over the various Tire Rack Extreme Summer Performance tires (200tw) offerings. What is with the limited size selection of the most popular? Seems no vendor offers a 17" in anything over 255. I recall last year it took Tire Rack forever to ship my 315/18 Rival S; didn't get them until late April or early May. Even CCW couldn't coax BFG to ship a set to them for mounting. Seems the choices are even worse this year and it's the middle of May. Are all the vendors about to release new compounds or revive old designs; both?

I agree that 100 vs 200 isn't worth having 2 sets of tire laying around.

However, if you must have something stickier than 200's..... I W2W race an SN95 in a class that requires Toyo's and have run 888, RA1, and RR's (not R1R). I'm racing and aggressive and after about 4 laps the 888's are greasy and sliding all over the place. The RA1's are long lasting and consistent but really need to be shaved to 4/32 to be there best. The RR is a 40 treadwear and there is a grip difference. They don't last quite as long but I'll get 30-35 heat cycles out of them before I retire them.

I agree with your guys saying that the 100 difference in compound isnt worth it. Im thinking when these NT555 are gone, ill buy some basic summer cheap tyres for the street, and save money for the slicks. Sometimes i wish i didnt spend the money on the NT05s to just bake on the street. However i hear people have got 30k miles out of the NT555 so we will see..

super cheap prices and free shipping, tire rack doesnt carry nitto, so ive always used performancetread.com then i found discounttiredirect, and got the slicks (4 NT01's) shipped to my house for under 1k

I appreciate the input. I understand the arguments not to have both a 100 and 200 set. The reason I like keep a dedicated road course set is to try and minimize harm to them from street driving and too many heat cycles. Secondly my ride has a fair bit of horsepower and a 100 rating has historically been able to hold the car better. My goal now (besides hunting down $100K cars in my old 86 Mustang) is just be safe and stay on the track. Sticky tires give me comfort. I could easily just run a 200 tread wear street / autocross tire and have another set of 200 tread wear dedicated road course tires. Older road course tires could turn into street tires.

t500hps. I appreciate the input on the R888. All the folk who recommended that tire to me have lighter weight applications. Sounds like they can go away quickly when pushed in an heavier applications.

Sounds like no one really has anything bad to say about any of the 200 TW candidates?

The NT05 is very inexpensive comparatively. $160 per tire shipped plus no tax. Next 200 TW tire is the Falken which is $189 per tire from the tirerack.com However, shipping and taxes bring it to $225 per tire. Price is a concern as always but most importantly the tire needs to hold the car. Victoracers did a good job and the Dunlop Star Spec was not bad either. Cant get either of those now. Buying tires is fun.

Tire Rack did a test last year on the four more popular 200 wear Extreme Summers. The Rival S was on top followed very closely by Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R; Hankook Ventus R-S3 (v2); and Kumho Ecsta V720. From there, I'm not sure how the other offerings would fair. And TR doesn't carry all the alternatives (e.g., Nitto). But the more important issues is sizing. The vendors aren't producing the larger sizes this year especially in 17".
