If you were at VIR this weekend, you probably saw a shiney new 2011 GT driven by NASA-MA's chief Chris Cobetto.

I've known Chris since 2002. He's well decorated in the Spec E30 world and has now built an American Iron car to campaign this year.

I've been following the build up at Performance Autosport on their Facebook page and they posted a cool video using Vbox of his qualifying session (also, this was basically their shakedown session too since the car got "finished" on Thursday)

Video from Qualifying (specifically, see 5.40ish mark :)

(no one paid me to post this, I just think it's a cool project to share with you guys)

Enjoy!

Nice video, thanks for posting it. Chris was driving it well!!!

It was a great weekend at VIR but car problems ended it for me. The black car you see in Chris' video parked on the side of the road is me :crying: . I broke a rocker stud at some point in the day (during morning warmups I guess), but the stud girdle kept the end in check. Only symptom was the car was a bit down on power and the lash "ticking" was a bit louder. I run a solid roller so it ticks anyway. No knocking or other sounds noted and the engine ran fine. It was so windy and dusty I didn't want to pull a valve cover off and check the lash. On the second lap of qualifying the car started missing bad going into turn 4 (you can see where I try to get off the track in front of Chris in the video) but that's not a nice place to be sitting so I limped the car around the lower esses to get to track exit. No oil leaks, no smoke, gauges were good but the car died just past the bridge.... rotor in distributor had come apart. Had to get towed in. Found the distributor issue and replaced the rotor, but the car still wouldn't run right. Loaded the car and came home. I hope I didn't hurt anything else, the valve nor the pushrod appear bent but I do have to replace the rocker and will replace all the rocker studs....

What specifically?

I think the engine is pretty much straight off the production line since they barely had time to put it together.

Saleen coilovers, swaybars, etc.

I know the car will be tuned using Bully Dog's new tuner.

Wheels are HRE

Transmission is different, I'm assuming maybe a better final drive....

I'll see if someone can post the specs. I think they were just glad to get it to VIR this past weekend.

Specs from Cobetto:

Stock 5.0, Rockland gears t-56 magnum syncro close ratio six speed,
Saleen full suspension (stock rear sway bar) w 9kg front and 5 kg rear
springs. Exedy single disk ccompetition clutch. Single piece steel
driveshaft, 3:73 final drive (stock LSD), mustang track pack 14"
Brembo front and stock rear brakes with hawk DTC series brake pads, C
&R radiator, oil cooler, differential cooler, HRE wheels on Toyo RA1
tires.

Important to know that this was initial testing and that we
will be trying a KW double adjustable suspension and BAER brake 6R
setup. The aero hood from Tiger Racing should be worth at least .5
seconds and the wing and splitter worth two.

He went on to write that he had to lift A LOT in
the uphill esses because of a high speed understeer due to air being
trapped under the hood.

I was looking through the pictures and was thinking to myself that thing must be really heavy, then I got to the picture of the scales. 3324lbs is a pig for a race car. And even at that weight he is overpowered for the class. Don't get me wrong, it is a very nice, very clean car, but there is nothing really special about it. I checked mylaps.com and found out he got 5th and 4th sat and sun. and was a couple seconds a lap behind the front runners. Granted some of the AI cars in the mid atlantic region and really quick. With a few more goodies and some tuning and seat time, I'm sure he can run near the front.

The car was having computer issues throughout the weekend which really held it back, not to mention the aero hasn't been installed and this was his first time time out with the car.

how did he go about detuning it to get to the AI pw:wt ratio? I would like to see how much just aero alone will help around a long track like VIR. I'm sure with a few more tweaks, and some seat time, he can drop a couple seconds a lap. And again, very clean looking car. I'm jealous of the cage.
