Just wondering if anyone out there is running 4.56's with p-head combo on a 26" tire.

Do factory stock guys run that steep of gears?

What rpm are you crossing the trap at? What mph?

With 4.10 gears and and 26" et street I was trapping 6100rpm and 109-110. I think 4.56 might not work to well. My power band feels like its over around 5600rpm.

Factory Stock is a different animal powerband wise than what guys like us are running.................maybe John Leslie will chime in with some info but the 5.0 magazine article on Uncle Robins F/S build-up a few years ago showed some dyno tests making good power up to 6200 or so................

i put 4.30's in mine for that reason, i still have the factory 6250 rev limiter and hope to get 114-116 out of it before the limiter with 27.5-28.00 tall tires !

I run through the traps at 5900-6000 @ 110-111 with a 4.10 and 26's. I plan on swapping it out to a 4.30 in my coupe.

I run the same 4.10 and through the trap is between 5900 and 6000 also. Figured 4.30 is around 6200. And 4.56 6600? Wouldnt mind getting an extender and winding it out.

Everyone says dont fear the gear

Yeah but to much gear could hurt you up top because you will be out of your power band on the top end unless you shift into overdrive.

Brothers 86 GT runs low 12s @ 109 or so. Car makes power to 5800-6000, we shift it right around 5900 and hit the traps at a similar RPM with 26s.

Car went 12.26 today with 3200' DA and a rusty driver.

By the way Im talking stock cam, retarded 2 degrees I believe.

Hey guys, just chiming in..lol. Well I run a 4.30 gear as well as most of the class does, or a 4.10. i run a 275/50/15 BGF=26'' tall tire. Im shifting at 6400 and come through traps about 6800-6900. I hope this helps you, if you have anymore questions, let me know. Are you thinking about running Factory Stock?

Not thinking of running factory stock..... Juts wanted to see if it was possible to run that steep of a gear.....I just read an article in mmff about a factory stock fox with E7's running 11.1's and under gear it said "gears? What gears....so I figured he was going steep.

Well thats another whole story there. That car has gone 11.20's in competition in beyond perfect air, -300 below sea level. If we were tuned right we would have gone 11.0'-.1's, but as for gear not sure what he is running. but i know most of the other guys are running 4.30 and 4.10's. But if you have stock cam in there, and stock valves and springs you will be shifting into 5th with a 4.56. We are allowed to run a max of .480 lift, with any valve job and if i remember correctly different springs with max pressure of 150 or 180. Thats the whats making our rpm so much higher in my opinion.

The vehicles mentioned in this thread are not that different than a NHRA stocker: And those cars run a ton of gear.

It is not uncommon at all for a small motor stocker to run 4:88 to 5:13, to a small motor in a heavy car to use even a 5:57 to 6:14.

The larger motored, lighter cars will not use as much gear.

As well, those racers do NOT use a radial slick on a stick car. I don’t know why, but they will usually use a bias tire with a stick.
