Im looking to build a 351w/ AOD combo to replace the worn out 390 FE / and C6 in my 67 Ranchero. I put 4400 miles on it last year in the stock configuration and was mostly content to leave it be, but after going back to Cruisin O.C. a couple of weeks ago I realize I miss having some power.

Originally thought about doing a mild build with the 390, but even a 400 hp build with entry level parts would cost substantially more than a 351w refresh with a good top end. Then there is still the fact of not having an O.D. I currently have 2:75s in the rear so i can cruise at 75 on the high way.

So this is what I was thinking

351w refresh at 10.5/ 11:1 compression
AFR 195 heads
Performer RPM air gap intake port matched
custom cam
QF 750 carb
FPA 1 3/4 longtubes
2500 / 3000 rpm convertor
AOD
4:11 gears
looking for nice linear power from 2500 to 6500, crusing rpms 2500 or less at 75 mph

If this thing ever sees the track it would on street tires, and just for grins. Ive got about 8000 to spend on the engine and trans minus the carb as I already own 1.

let me know what you guys think, im open to suggestions

Your parts are a solid plan.. But a rebuilt 390 w/good heads & intake, etc makes a strong, practically bulletproof motor also..especially at that power level ;) IF it were mine,I'd at least entertain rebuilding what you have, and find a Gear Vendors OD to go behind the C6..

I heavily considered this, especially since ive already had the trans rebuilt last year. The problem lies in the shear dollar to hp ratio. The small entry level edelbrock heads are only 100 bucks less than the far superior AFR 195s. A roller conversion isnt cheap, but the real problem lies in the factory shaft mount rocker system, short of staying with the factory parts, and adding the end supports, then running a mild hydraulic flat tappet cam, then another 1000 dollars for good headers that dont hang below the trans pan. Ive racked up nothing but compromises, and still need to drop 3000 grand for a GV unit and driveshaft mods.

This way I can sell the current set up in complete running condition and should atleast cover the cost of disc brake upgrade, Not to mention the over 300lb weight loss lol.

If someone can put together a FE based combo that costs less than building a 351 stroker but make more than a decent 302 then please enloghten me. Ive been trying to work it out, but even the most basic build from places that specialize in FE stuff, like Survival Motorsports end up with 302 power for alot more cash.
