96' Cobra with 17x9 m58 Cobra R's, 800 lb. front springs, and 1.5 degrees of negative camber, I want Kuhmo XS 295-35-17's on all 4 corners but I'm worried that they will rub up front on corner entry when I'm hard on the brakes.

Right now I have 275 Toyos and they do not rub at all but they do look pretty close to the fender lip...






I'm tempted to just get them, but I'll be pissed if I spend $800+ in tires and then ruin them every time I stand on the brakes. This is a daily driven car so I can't just dial in 3 degrees of camber if they do rub (nor do I want to as I'm not willing to sacrifice straight line braking) so I guess I'm sorta screwed if they rub... any ideas???

I run 295/40 V710 tires that rubbed until I increase spring rate. I also run max camber. Now it is not a problem. A friend ran that same size tire too, but it chewed up his liner with H&R race springs which are much softer than what I run. You might have to change your set up if it rubs.

Are those fender lips already rolled?
I'm not sure if they were rolled at some point but looking at them I don't see how rolling them would move them any further than they are right now.

These won't generate the same level of grip as those 710's so maybe I'll be ok? How much camber did you need to dial in to prevent them from rubbing?

what about getting a small wheel spacer for the front if you're worried? IIRC the 94-98 has less clearance than the 99-04

The inside of the tire was what was rubbing on the fender liner. My friends 2002 GT had the same problem.

I always dial in max camber for autox and then pull the CC plates back out for the street. MM's CC plates are awesome for that. If you drive on the street, it shouldn't be a problem, but when you autox I don't know if it will rub with street tires. Using a street tire you would think it might not, but a 800lb conventional spring is relatively soft for these cars, and you will still have a lot of body roll.

I'm worried about it rubbing on the outside so a spacer would make it worse, I know it's going to rub the sway bar on the inside but that's ok I'm used to that from these 275's.

whats up ciotti? u got any good pics of ur car while ur hard on the brakes? that might give u an idea of how much room u have. it seems like the general consensus is that they will rub something, but no one said it rubbed the fender lip which is what ur concerned about. i would say get 2, put them on the front, if they work out then get 2 for the rear, if not then put them in the rear and get 275's for the front. just and idea.

on a side note, im seriously thinking about fitting 315's on the front of my car. i know i'll have major clearance issues that ill have to work out, but it will be more for the "thats bad ass" factor as well as when i race.

When I look at pictures of the car under full braking I feel like I'll be ok, but the 295 XS's will be much grippier than my current 275 Proxes 4's so there will be more suspension compression with them...

I'm thinking I may wuss out/play it safe and go with 275 40's, they'll be $200 cheaper and I know they won't rub... It is still my daily driven car so I'll use that as my excuse :)

I wound up getting the 285 40 17's and they're BIG, at least a full inch wider than my 275 Toyo's. I noticed last night that they only hang out on the driver side which didn't make sense at first as I know the camber is the same on both sides, but then I remembered that the driver side front quarter panel has much fresher paint on it than anywhere else. So, I'm assuming that the driver front was hit at some point and when that panel was put back on it sunk in a bit further, so now I'm guessing I have to get that fender rolled to get that clearance back as my factory CC plates are maxed.

I'll get some pictures of the tires tonight, they're dead sexy!

Night and day when compared to the Toyos, the sidewalls are much stiffer which makes them feel laser sharp, the tramlining on bad roads is much worse(which was to be expected), and the limit of grip is WAY beyond what the Toyo's could ever provide.

For what it's worth, one of the guys that runs in my region has a fox body with the 16x7 pony wheels and 275 width Kuhmo's that work great for him, it's actually a $2008 challenge car that placed 8th this year so it's definitely working for him.

Before you go poking to much fun at squeezing a really wide tire on a narrow rim, check what some of the Solo 2 Nat's top runners were running.
