which manual tranny for turbo?

hey guys, im just wondering what manual tranny you guys are using that are running turbo setups. will a stock t5 survive if you dont beat on it, or will upgrading pretty much need to be instantaneous? in my case, the motor would be stock block, h/c/i. thanks for helping a turbo noob

well I went through a stock clutch but the T-5 is still holding up. I TRY to be easy on it and shift it easier then if I had a solid trans. it dosent allways happen but I try lol..I dont run too stickey/tall of a tire and its held for about 9months,about 30 1/4 mile passes and countless street beatings. its a toss up, some explode with 225hp and some hold up to 10-11 sec passes all day. just depends on how lucky you get I guess. Ive broke 2 before the turbo but this one is holding FOR NOW. One day it will die.lol

IF I were you I would run the stock t-5 for a bit unless you can afford to throw down the cash for a real trans setup. Im poor so I nurse the t-5 lol but IF I had the money I would SURELY run something different lol

This has been covered before, some people can make a T5 last and others can not. Some can not make a T5 last in a stone stock car.

put in a new tranny while you're at it. I had a Tremec 3550 and had no problem but i never run my car hard and long enough to really say if it would hold up. If you have the money go with TKO 600 or T-56.

I lost a T-5 back with the stock motor. My two closest friends, both who also had foxes, one lost a T-5 also on a stock motor, and the other friend went through 3 of them, with a stock motor on a 150 shot. I didn't even bother with my T-5. I had the problem fixed, then sold it, and bought a T-56. Hopefully this should be my last trans.

I found the ratio's alittle too close with T5/6..
The 5 speed imo is better with turbo engines.. Now have TKO 600, twin plate clutch...

Is there a TKO 900 I did get my TKO upgraded but I don't see their specs here???

Unless its some sales talk ??

The power of Google...

MMR Pro Trans 900
This is our street/competition transmission and the same that we use to hold the current record. These transmissions are derived from the NEW TKO 600 units. 1st, 2nd ,3rd & 4th gear along with the cluster gear receive a heat tempering that dramatically increases strength, each gear is then deburred to improve shifting, minimize noise and increase efficiency which means less drive train power loss than a stock transmission. Transmission also includes 26 spline input and 31 spline output shafts that have been heat tempered to dramatically increase the Pro Trans 900’s strength. A few other proprietary modifications are completed before the transmission is re-sealed, serial numbered and shipped to the customer. Each transmission even includes a billet aluminum shifter (handle not included) This transmission is rated by MMR up to 900HP and vehicles running 9.00/150 and slower and requires increased service intervals for race applications. Gear ratios are:1st-2.87 2nd 1.89 3rd-1.28 4th-1.0 and 5th is available with .82 or .64.

Yes the more power and torque the engine has makes it more fun to drive an auto...They spool much better and don't wear out clutch plates!!!

TKO 600....I would sell the T5 and use the cash to help buy the new trans. If you just keep the T5 in it will go and you can sell it for parts...in the end do it right the first time.

The TKO-600 and a good Spec Stage 3 or twin disc McCleod should take plenty of abuse and handle it all day; unless of course you are trying to run 900+ HP through it.

My t-5 went kaboom after about 5k miles (rolling into 3rd on the freeway).

So far my 3550 has atleast that many miles...and several dragstrip runs as well. So far, so good!

Is yours loud? Mine is loud as hell supposedly because of the type of gears and how they were cut.

my friend was dynoing his 93 lx with a hp 60mm kit and the boost spiked at 16psi and made 546rwhp but it lifted the head.... it was around 480ish i think what he had it tuned to and it held up fine. over 100k on the stock t5. mine has 155k on it and 2nd is really bad and 3rd is getting bad and i only have a 100 shot on mine. i run it hard tho. id say run it till it blows, ur stock clutch wont hold tho. when it blows get a tko 600 but u will have to get a new clutch because the tkos need a 26 spline clutch. if you have the extra money when the turbo goes on put the tranny in then to. it would save you from buying a clutch. for any manual trans it all depends on how it is driven
