Turbo chargers on Ebay? Looking to do a DIY project.

I was wondering if there is a difference between the turbo chargers I see for sale in the $200 to $400 range I see on ebay and getting junkyard turbos that will work on a 302? I've seen a lot of bad things on the kits that are offered fairly cheaply on ebay and very minimal things about the turbos listed on there. Are they any different than getting JY turbos and having them rebuilt? Are they not the same quality as the ones offered from other established dealers or on factory turbo'd cars? Are they just cheap knock offs of actual Garrett turbos? Just looking for some info before I buy. Thanks!

I myself have a pt63 from precision turbo's and a t70 gt45blah blah blah jdm something er nother from ebay looks like about the same quality on the outside but im sure it cheaply done on the inside but the worst case scenario its a peice so i put the pt63 on theyre just cheap turbos no dual ball bearing no ceramic coating nothing great but they do seem to either have to bi or to little ar in my opinion! mines a 70 with a 105 should be in the 80s or mid to low 90's!

Personally the one place not to go cheap is the turbos

but you dont need any crazy GT series turbos.

Plain old T3 or T3/T4 or T4 Garret turbos with external
waste gate are fine. But they need to be put together
by a turbo shop you know and trust and can take them
back to.

I paid $650 each for my T3/T4's or about $150 more than
you can get them off the web for, but I have a local
warranty on them and know who and where they came from.

I agree. I got my IHIs from the junkyard. You want to make sure that there is no damage from loose shafts. Like if the impeller is scraping the housing, don't bother with it. My IHIs looked good and seemed to work but inexperienced me wound up rebuilding them because of an oil leakage issue (that later turned out to be blowby in the crankcase going up the drain line and forcing oil out the exhaust!!!). I rebuilt them myself with a kit from turbocity. I sent the wheels and shaft in there for balancing. Kit was about 100, balancing was 35. Great deal. I also sent a third set of wheels and shaft in there and he showed me how they were damaged.
When you have a 5.0 you don't need any ball bearing turbo. Search moovs and check out his amazing numbers with the good Tbird T3s. Unless you are building some kind of 9 second car, should be good to go.
