Drove 144 miles, got 16.25mpg and didn't break down

Just thought I'd share with you guys the first weekend I've actually got to drive the car since turbocharging it. The car ran great all weekend and actually didn't break down. While cruising on the highway a new GT tried to run on me, but beat it back like it was standing still, lol.

These cars are amazingly fast. It's unreal how well they pull w/ the turbo.

To top it all off I still got 16mpg with quite a bit of spirited driving. Gotta love the 3.08's !!!

What kinda mileage are you guys seeing??

See ya, Will

As far as mileage goes…I typically get ~ 24mpg just cruising on the freeway. Gotta love the 3.27's and the ability to tune it yourself!

That's awesome. I would like to get out on the freeway and see what it would get. I live in the country and a small town so lots of stop and go and hilly roads.

The next step though is to upgrade the cooling system. It will start to get kinda warm if I'm on it a lot. Currently its all stock cooling so gotta figure out what i want to do.

Mine cools great with a cheap 3 core radiator and a 99 v6 electric fan.

Where'd you get a cheap 3 core that fit well? I don't remember for sure but aren't the factory only 2 core?

I've got a spare perma-cool fan at home that I think I'll strap to the front of the rad, wire in a relay and run it at low speeds and in the staging lanes.

Autozone sells a cheap 3 core that works well. All it takes is a small amount of trimming to the rubber isolaters that mount around the radiator and your good to go.

I am getting like low 20 to mid 20s on the highway with 3.27s and super low 5th. But in a mix of fast, traffic and highway, I still get 17. It is really true, cars appear to stand still in your rear view when you get on it with a turbo car. On the highway, the acceleration feels like you are going from a stop when you hit it at 60.

Cooling, I got a cheap aluminum radiator from summit for 250 or something. I am using a summit electric fan kit but now have a mark VIII fan that I will install with a new alternator.

Congrats on the good running!

Erich you are having problems with your alternator?
I think mine doesn't like the turbo or the electric
fan running as much as it does.
With the wideband, stereo, heater etc
it is looking very low on the guage 12.8 - 13.3
I have already rebuilt it (last year) but i think
i need a 200amp.

What are you replacing yours with?

And i agree at 60mph the turbo sucks
you right into the seat and keeps you there.

Rawkin-no the alternator is fine, I am just anticipating trouble if I stick that fan on there. Supposedly that thing draws 70 amps when it turns on. Bye bye stock alternator. so in anticipation of the fan install, I got an alternator out of a late 90s ish cougar/tbird something with a 6 cyl. Those things have the late style 3G alternator but have the mounting ears positioned at 180 degrees like a stock fox alt. But they put out 130 amps. You need to grind the alt bracket a bit to get it in there. Funny thing too, the pulley is larger on the 3G so it is kind of an underdrive to boot.
But no problems with the stock alt and the turbo. Have not cooked it either, they are kind of close.
Erich

actually-if you have a 94, you already have the good alternator. You should be fine.

Yeah, its a '94 so it has the good alt.

Is the radiator you got a universal fit or was it designed for your car?

I had also heard the same about the mark viii fan about pulling a lot of amps. I think I'm going to try just a better radiator and a turbo blanket and see what that does. If that doesn't cure it I'll go w/ a bigger fan.

Thanks, Will
