500HP possible with GT40 heads and intake? How close can I get?......

I've got a complete 96 Explorer 5.0 engine sitting in my shop. It's the one with the standard gt40 heads, not the gt40p's. I'm thinking about pulling it down and maybe strengthening the bottom end a bit, pistons, rods, and a girdle. 306 or 331, either way is an option. Of course head studs, appropriate gaskets and whatever else it takes. My main question is can I see 500rwhp and how much boost will it take. I just built a 306 with edelbrock heads and a vortech s-trim @10psi that made almost 450rwhp, so I know or at least I think or hope it's possible on a gt40 motor with a turbo. What kind of boost should I be trying to make? I'm basically looking to get the most power for the money. What are my options here?

there is going to be no set number for how much boost=x amount of power. but i think a master power t70 will be the best bet in your app. its cheap and does the job. i would say its going to take close to 15psi to make 500whp just my 2 cents

I made 463 with a hellion kit on a stock motor with 12lbs of boost. I would think 500 would be pretty easy with same boost on the 306 motor with better heads and intake, and that is with a 62mm turbo

You don't need great heads to make good power with a forced induction setup. You'll be able to reach that goal very easily.

Clevor finished!! Now on to everything else...

Well, I know that you can't specify an exact amount of boost, but around 12-15 psi wouldn't be bad at all, I think this is the way I'm gonna go

You should not have trouble hitting 500 hp. Twin garrett .60/.63s will do the trick.

I making 396 at the rear wheels, probably 460 or so at the crank @ 15% parasitic loss through the drivetrain, with a totally stock 77,000 mile 5.0 engine with just a 62 mm turbo and only 8 psi boost. I'd say it's totally possible. Turbo boost is a beautiful thing!!

When i pulled the T-trim off my 358 cid motor it was making 555rwhp with 10 psi. I went turbo intercolled and with the same boost level of 10 psi the car made 618rwhp. Turbos a driven by engine waste ie exhaust, superchargers take power to make power. It would not surprize me if you took the s-trimoff and went turbo you would be at 500rwhp! My .02
