Question Floating the valves????

If it isin't 1 thing it's another..... Ever since I raced that Supra my car has been chuging at high RPM (5,200+). I'm not sure what it feels like to float the valves, never done it before... What does it feel like???? Heres what is happening: When I get into the boost it runs great, once I get around 5200 rpm its starts chuging or missing. It dosen't really make a sound just kind of losses and gaines power real fast, almost like on a rev limiter. my shift light is set @ 5,600 and never comes on... Once I shift into 2nd it drops down to like 4,800-5,000 and pulls real hard to 5,200 then starts chuging, hit 3rd pulls like a raped ape till 5,200?????? I am thinking either I need a new set of plugs, wires, cap&rotor or the valves are floating???? This has never happened before and I ran 12-14 psi all last year. Maybe the valve springs just got weak BTW, I am running An E-303 cam (.498 lift), GT40 heads with stock springs (I think). I will be cranking up the boost this year also (18psi). What do you guys think??? THANKS!

Jeremy

What plug gap do you have? Try clossing them to say 35 thou.
You usually get a sound like hail on steel roof with valve float/ bounce.Fit good valves springs when you can- good insurance!!

Check your plug gap, but it sounds like valve float to me.

Which rocker arms are you running? I had the same thing happen when I put mine together with the original springs on. I guess they just couldn't take the .542 lift. It seemed to just hit a rev limiter. Mine got worse fairly quick. 5700-5500-5200-4800 in about 2 weeks.
A set of crane replacement spring fixed it. The conical ones. They were around $100. It pulls all the way to 6000.

what fuel system are you running?
last year my car was cutting out at higher rpms. found out the relay for my external pump took a chit.
change the fuel filter, new cap & rotor, check wires. do the easy stuff first.

I am running the stock stamped rockers. My fuel system is 255 in tank, 255 in-line, Kirban fuel press reg, 42 lb Lucas injectors. I have a set of plugs and wires on the way. We'll see what happens...

I'm not running a relay with it I just tied it into the factory in-tank harness.

That could be your problem.Too much current and drops the voltage to both pumps. Still think springs are suspect though..
An extra relay is cheap and easy to fit...

Jeremy,

My GT-40's had the same problem and I had to get new valve springs...I remember it was just above the 5,000 rpm range that I had the problem. It sorta felt like a rev limiter...almost like someone had changed rev limiter from 6250 to around 5200...I'd check it out...always could be something else but has me wondering since that kindof acts like mine did and I had to replace mine.

Damn....now thats fast lol

Cool it was something simple...gotta love that ....when my spark was blowing out it was cutting me out at around 4000 rpm's...since it was alot lower rpm from that didnt think to mention it...least the beast is running 100%
