97 Explorer Turbo

Whats going on everyone? I havnt been on the forum for quite some time so i figure i should show up and post some info on my latest project.
Its a 97 explorer that i got for free from my father in law. 300kmiles on the body but its nearly perfect. No rust at all. He picked it up in Florida a couple of yrs ago and just didnt drive it anymore. I immediately started throwing parts at it. Mostly because i had a bunch lying around for my 50 Hudson project.(its still a ways from getting aftermarket engine stuff). Anyway, first thing was lowering it about 3". I threw some 20"foose legends on it and loved it.

I was happy for a while but decided to just go all out. Like i said, i had most of these parts just sitting on the shelf already. With $0 in the explorer so far, i had made up my mind.

1997 Explorer XLT
2wd, 5.0 auto
Distributorless ignition
Ported gt40p.
Xe264hr-12 cam.
Alexsparts .580 lift springs.
1.6 roller rockers.
Chromoly pushrods.
Parker funnelweb efi intake.
Edelbrock elbow.
92mm LSX throttle body .
42 lb injectors.
Aeromotive fuel rails.
1:1 boost referenced pressure regulator.
PMAS 42# maf.
70mm gt45 turbo.
2-44mm wastegates.
50mm blow off valve.
Custom hot side piping.
Custom cold side(soon).
3.5" exhaust .
Dynomax mini bullet muffler.
Beyea Custom Headers Muffler 3.5" W/turn Down.
Innovate scg-1 gauge/controller with failsafe

Im working on finishing it up this week (hopefully). Im still trying to decide whether or not to go with only methanol injection for charge cooling.
Looking for around 450whp until i can afford a Dart shp

Just got back from logging on the highway. Its so slow off the line. And I need some better tires. 41mph 1-2 shift is spinning the tires. Its killing me. 7psi peak around 3800-4000rpm falls off to around 4.5-5.5psi until 5600. Still working on the gain on the boost controller. Im new to all of this stuff.
Pic is the 1-2 shift. Rpm in red. Green is speed. Tan is load and the dark blue is tps.

What A/R is the turbine housing?

For everything that is worthwhile, there is a counterfeit.

Love what you’re doing here it’s very unique. You are probably also close to maxing those injectors out too.

I'm actually impressed with the 1.9s 60ft for a 4300lb truck with a 302, low boost and crappy tires.

What gear are you running? I'd bet you could knock a second off you ET once you're getting 450 to the wheels.

I would throw some nitrous on to help spool before I changed turbo

Love the build.

I'm no expert, but I've read the GT40 heads are boost limited and will lift at a certain PSI so be careful. One thing that helped my car take off was to wait until like 4psi before pulling timing. The motor will be safe from detonation at that level and it will get the Turbo spinning.

That thing is a total sleeper!

I'd get an Intercooler on there. CXR has plenty of universal kits that might fit the bill.

Ive thought about nitrous. Honestly, I dont know enough about it to feel safe with doing an install.

Id love to get some better heads but I'm out of cash for this vehicle at the moment.

I actually measured for an intercooler a couple of days ago. I built all of tbe piping with the plans of a front mount.

More gear would get the engine speed up faster and I would think that should help get the turbo spinning faster sooner. Looks like you have a pretty tall tire. I would run 4.30's with the roughly 28" tire size you have. 60 mph would be turning around 2200 and 70 mph would be around 2500. Not outrageous revs. Get up and go would be enhanced a lot!

Alternately (or also) you could experiment with a quick spool piping setup. I saw pics of one that routed both exhaust banks to half of a divided turbo until a preset point then opened up to both sides. The theory was the full exhaust volume would work on the smaller flow path spinning up the turbine faster until the engine speed was high enough to spin both flow paths. Not sure if it would work, but it was an interesting idea.

I have thought about re gearing.
I have also looked into the quick spool. I did a spool test with a simple block off plate at the turbo. It definitely spools quicker with flow directed to the one passage but without opening up the other side its limited. The boost actuated plate, i think, would work well. If they werent so expensive.

I saw this where they are using a BOV to control the path of the exhaust. I've seen the plates and they are expensive. I've also read they are tricky to make and not have them fail.

I did not realize your not running an intercooler, I think that would help. That along with the gear change mentioned would make it feel totally different.

Well, Im pretty sure that my trans pump gasket is blown. I'm leaking fluid everywhere and I'm in constant forward and whatever gear I select. Could be something worse but it seems to me like that gasket.
