Buyer Beware? AC burnup
Hi, everyone. I've spent a lot of time reading on these forums but I only recently joined. I'm curious if anyone has had any major problems with the AC compressor after turbocharging? Here's why I'm wondering. I went to look at a relatively built '00gt yesterday. The car fired up, sounded beautiful, very minimal rust, rode out nicely. But then shortly into the test drive, there was a strong burning rubber smell. Sure enough after we got back to his house, I popped the hood and found that the AC compressor was smoking and obviously the air it was blowing was no longer cold. I'm going to find out if it's the original compressor because if it is, I feel like it would just be an old compressor finally taking a dump on the worst day possible. I'm assuming it ran dry? My dilemma is that the guy said he would replace it (he's a professional mechanic of several decades) before selling it to me but if it's not an uncommon issue for a turbocharged 4.6l 2v then maybe I should consider deleting the AC. It's not going to be a primary driver. If you guys think it's a fluke thing then I would have him replace it because it would be much cheaper than having it done myself. Some background info: Mostly stock 4.6l 2v with a Hellion 62mm Turbo kit running at 7lbs of boost. GT500 fuel pump, 42lb injectors. I just don't see how any of that could really matter that much to the AC system but I'm certainly no expert. If I left out any vital details, let me know. Thanks, everyone!
