Thoughts on 331 with S480...help me decide :/

I'm finally ready to take my street/strip turbo car to the next level. My current combo consists of a nicely built 4-bolt 331 with a Pony Down B series stage 3 kit with a PT76GTS. I'm running a TH400 with brake and 3.27 gears.

The car ran 9.40 @ 144 at 18 psi this past Fall...I thought about trying to get the car into the 8s with the current combo, but my buddy wants to buy my current turbo kit, and I'd like to move into a T6-based kit.

Now that you have a little history, my dilemma which has me void of sleep for several nights is:

Will an T6 flange basic S480 flow the air to put my car solidly in the 8s, shifting at 6700 rpm?

I'm leaning towards the 1.1 AR exhaust housing to keep my spool rpm reasonable because I still drive this car a lot on the street, but I hear that the 1.1 AR uses an 87mm turbine (will limit power potential?), whereas the standard 1.32 uses the 96mm turbine (won't spool until 10,000 rpm??).

I guess I just don't want to put a new shiny Pony Down T6 kit on my car with a S480 and the car be slower than it is now!

Another option I have is to have Jeff at PDP build me a T6 kit with a T4 flange so I can use the Mid West turbo that I have for sale on here: it's an SX400 with an 83mm compressor and a hybrid 1.0 AR exhaust with a 92mm turbine wheel...this turbo can make BIG power, but I don't want my new turbo kit to be limited to a T4 flange turbo.

Well, thanks for reading my book of issues...please let me know your thoughts and experiences.

I plan to keep my full 3" exhaust with tailpipes, so the T6 kit would be plumbed accordingly.

Bottom line: I want a full exhaust 8.50 street car! Haha! I'm not asking for much!

Google s480 times. Those are bad turbos. Lots of 8 sec streetcars with them. They even put cars in the 4s with the race covers

You have a 331 cube motor and only reving to 6600.Im no prefessional but i spoke with the guys at forced inductions and theyre very helpful. From what they said to me was for me (331 and 6500rpm) to use a 475/83 1.1 or the 476Billet wheel both with t4 not t6.But i wanted street/strip.

Id call them and talk with them about your needs, everyones car is different or preference.I picked up a s475 t4 with a race cover for a good deal for my new set up and figured i could have them upgrade it later if i max it out and i can compare for myself.

Also..the hotside has a lot to do with it.I ditched my ponydown kit to run BBK shortys ,with a tein scroll set up fully divided.2.25 pipes to help spool.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to send my S483 back and have a T6 housing put on it. I'm also upgrading to a billet 83mm compressor blade. This turbo coupled with a Pony Down T6 kit should put me where I want to be.

I'm considering switching to E85 also, as I've heard there is power to be had from the cooling properties of the fuel.

WOW! That is killer! I'll be happy with solid 8.80s for this coming year. Sounds like I have a good shot at succeeding with my S483 turbo!

I am still very new to turbo's and will be building a 337-360 but I have not committed to the stroke just yet. Not trying to hack your thread but some more basic advice for a newbie? What stroke do you all recommend with a 8.2 deck? And what heads?

See my sig for performance numbers of 331/s480. I never turned it up past 16lbs. It will be much laggier than your current combo street driving but should be faster on the track.

Although I'm no expert by a long shot, I have been running turbo mustang combos since 1998...And my experience is that you really don't need a top dollar pro ported, huge cubic inch combo to go very fast with a turbo. A strong short block is needed of course.

I would need to know what your goals are? Is this primarily a street or track car? What fuel do you want to run? Do you want to pay a tuner to tune your car or do it yourself?

I can tell you that box stock Vic JR heads or any of the smaller TFS or AFR heads will be fine on a motor up to 347 ci...above that, you will need some serious heads with a serious induction system...that's why I stayed at 331 ci. There are guys knocking on the 7 second zone with a 306 ci and a S480 turbo.

Impressive numbers for sure! I never had my car on a dyno, but based on my best pass this year, the calculator is saying I made 724 rwhp. I'd really like to see 900 rwhp with my bigger turbo next year...hopefully putting me solidly in the 8s

A S480 should easily get you into the 8's. 4 season ago when I first put a turbo on my coupe I ran a Boss block 338 with OTB tfs highports, SR cam, PG, E85 with a plain S475. Went 8.8's at 156ish at 3400# on a 28" dr. Managed 5.6's at 125 on a 8.5" in the 1/8th.

How much boost were you running and how were you hooking on a drag radial? I'm having a terrible time hooking on drag radials, since my converter is rather tight. The car books on slicks though!! LOL!

At that time..~16#..all the turbo (cast S475) would make with my crappy old w/g setup. Think is was pulling mid 1.4's on the old style MT dr leaving on ~7#. Converter is the most important piece of a turbo auto car. I run a 9.5" PTC in my PG...Locks up ~6300...I shift at 7800 now.

I've pulled a 1.48 60' once with my DRs. I guess I'm not doing so bad. I switched to Team Z relocated uppers to get my instant center in check since my ride height is rather high for tire clearance.

I definitely have to see how the new S483 spools and launches. I'm guessing I'll be leaving with 10 psi or less, then running about 15 psi to get me into the 8s.
