too much blow by?

I just bought a 5.0 car with a 76mm on3 kit, my mechanic is telling me it has alot of blowby and probably needs rings. What do you guys think? the guy I bought it from says they all pressurize the crankcase a ton, which seems true from all of the catchcan and crank ventilation threads. Can someone help me out here? Are all of these turbo motors pushing lots of intake charge past the rings into the crankcase? Is that normal?

Could be some going by the rings, could be some going by valve guides/seals.
If its not smoking i'd just throw a catch can on it and give it hell.


If I was gettin smart with you, would you know it?

A leak down test will show if it needs rings or not.

Increased power = increased blow-by. How much is too much is a matter of opinion. As previously stated, if you are worried about it do a leak down test. Also make sure you have a decent crankcase breather system setup. IMO if you loose/burn less than 1L per 1000 miles you are doing good.

I'm in the same boat. My breather set up is pretty poor to say the least. Going to delete my pcv and run three lines (one from each valve cover and one out of where the pcv valve was and attach them to a vented oil catch can).

I am going to try a catch can from jegs this week for the valve covers, 5/8 line running from each valve cover, also have a turbo coupe pcv and oil separator on the pcv side with a catch can then back to the intake. I think what is happening is I'm pressurizing the crankcase through the pcv system, isn't the valve supposed to stop that from happening?

in theory it should stop it. however in reality if you have your pcv set up where it sees pressure it will end up in crank case. the turbo coupe pcvis better as it was designed for boost, but still not the best. if you have a way to put the pcv on the inlet side of turbo it will keep crank case pressure out.

How would you do that?

Anyone have a link to that kit that relocates the PCV from the intake manifold to just in front of the turbo? There was a hose fitting on a piece of tubing right in front of the turbo, behind the filter.

simplest way would be to get a plastic fitting(one that the hose will fit) from help section in parts store and cut a small hole in rubber part of air filter if there is enough room and put fitting there. then hook the hose up to it. Its how draw thru supercharger inlets are set up. you may have to put an oil seperator or ristricter in it if it is pulling on it to hard and sucking oil. most don't. if it does most likely your airfiler is a major restriction. IE it will pull from easiest route.

Ok so the PCV hose goes to that..and you plug up were it used to go?....What does this do?....do you have pictures?

yes. you just put a cap on it where it used to be hooked to. the purpose is to allow for crank case ventilation. it draws air thru it similar to how it did when hooked up to intake except under boost it is not pressurized thru it. i do not have any pictures. that is how mine was on my car when i had a blower. it had a powerpipe on it with a fitting screwd into it. its the same concept. on current set up i'm using a electric vaccum pump off of a 98 cobra and have -8line from passenger valve cover into a t that has pcv valve then to suck side of pump. outlet side of pump is into catchcan in passenger fender.
