Question General Turbo Talk & ON3 FF 2V Kit

I have been searching and reading up on turbo's and everything as i have zero experience with them and i still have a lot of questions for everyone. I will split it up into a General Turbo info post and a ON3 Performance Foward Facing Kit question post.

--GENERAL TURBO INFO/QUESTIONS--

What exactly is the AR size hot/cold?

What size turbo flanges are there? Most common?

How do you determine what size AR to get? Should you get different size AR for auto vs manuel?

What size AR for faster spool vs slower spool but more higher rpm power?

Where do you put in your wideband?

What is the average max WHP for what size pipe from turbo to intercooler and intercooler to motor?

Most common size pipe?

How do you determine what size intercooler to get?

For turbo'd FI cars is blow through or draw through the best?

What is considered a good RPM for a kit to hit full boost? (obviously it widely determines on what car/motor/turbo but i know getting full spool at 5,000rpms or so is not very good)

What exactly does the wastegate do?

How do you determine what size wastegate to get?

How do you determine what size blow off valve to get?

What causes that "fluttering" blow off sound, is it compressor surge or the blowoff valve?

What exactly is "compressor surge"?

Are turbo blankets a good or bad idea?

If your not scared to rot out the pipes use wrap on the hot side and reflective tape on the cold side correct?

How exactly does the air flow coming from/out of the exhaust? (comes from exhaust, goes into _____, then into _____, then into ____, etc...)

How do you know what size MM turbo will be right for you?

Whats the best turbo options? (ball bearing, oil cooled, water cooled, billit wheel, etc...)

Feel free to share any other information that i have not covered.

ON3 Performance FF 2V Kit questions

The website is old and outdated so i also have a lot of questions for those who have the kits and for "Chad" i think is his name on here with ON3.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVE THE KIT
For those that actually have or know someone with the kit has anyone actually seen with their own eyes the piping cracking or breaking like i have read about?

How fast does the new FF kit spool?

How many miles are on your FF kit for the ones that have it?

I know the kits leak bad but a simple gasket in between the pipes and better V-clamps fix these issues correct? Could you post links to the gasket and clamps....

So the piping from turbo to intercooler is 2.5" correct? Seems small, what kind of power can that support?

For those that own, installed, or PERSONALLY know someone with the kit how do you/they like it? (no i read this on the internet or my brothers, wife's, friend said this... stuff)

What kind of power did you make?

QUESTIONS FOR ON3

How is the turbo oil feed line routed from and back to the motor and what kind of fittings/hose does it come with?

What kind of line/hose is the oil relocation kit made from/out of?

What size FF header pipe do you use?

Do you offer ceramic coated or high temp coatings on your pipes? (how much more)

How much power can your 3 core intercooler support and do you make a 4 core?

The 38mm wastegate, how much power can it support?

Do you sell injectors as well?

How much air/power can your MAF unit support?

What are your Turbo housing sizes, Turbo brands you offer, and what all upgrades do you offer?

How many miles are on you shop car with the kit on it now?

I started to call and talk to ON3 personally or PM them but i just could not find a lot of these questions on the internet even though i have searched and searched and i know i am not the only one with these questions and i thought by posting this here it would help others like me with questions about your kit and save you from a lot of PM's, E-mail's, and phone calls. Again your website is really outdated and i could not find much info on what all you sell and options available with your kit. You can PM me any info or pricing you do not want to post, just thought this would help a lot of the 2V guys out with questions/concerns about your kit. If you want me to call or E_Mail you personally i will.

2002mustanggt, how many miles were on your 1st gen kit when you sold it and were the hotside pipes still in good functional condition? As in there were no cracks, pits, holes, or breaks were there?

THE REASON FOR SO MANY QUESTIONS

I am currently gathering parts for my Turbo build. I have some stuff already, waiting on a few things, and need to order a few things too but here is what it will consist of....

MMR 900 or 1000 4.75L Longblock
Trickflow heads
MMR stage 3 or MHS Stage 2 cams
Edelbrock lower intake, elbow, and rails
90mm Accufab throttlebody W/spacer
Full sumped tank, return style fuel system W/ a single 625lph pump
Turbo kit (up in the air with this part on what size, brand, kit to get)
Looking at 20-25psi
Will keep my Nitrous system on top and spray about a 100-150 shot to help with boost loss in between shifts. Car will stay 5-spd

I do drag race the car often and looking at making 800WHP via Turbo alone and closer to 900WHP on spray.

I have about everything figured out as far as motor goes but i need a little help with what size turbo, waste gate to get, AR size, and Turbo size. I am thinking a .96 AR with a 76MM billit wheel turbo. I want something that will spool fairly quickly and not be a turd down low till it gets to 4,500rpms or so........ I was thinking about a MP to save money over say a Comp turbo but didn't they change companies or just names?

Any suggestions? I know this is a lot to answer but i am new and willing to learn about Turbo's, Thanks in advance David.

My kit was a 4V...but they are the same, except the port shapes.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVE THE KIT
For those that actually have or know someone with the kit has anyone actually seen with their own eyes the piping cracking or breaking like i have read about? I have owned the kit, installed a few, and know of quite a few locally. I have seen zero cracks on the piping.

How fast does the new FF kit spool?
My kit hit full boost at 3600 rpm on the dyno, with a manual trans. On the street, it was at 3200 rpm.

With the auto/converter....it was instant.

How many miles are on your FF kit for the ones that have it?
I put 2,000 or so on it, and the new car it is on has been 2,000 or so.

The highest I know of locally, for fact....is 12,000~ miles.

I know the kits leak bad but a simple gasket in between the pipes and better V-clamps fix these issues correct? Could you post links to the gasket and clamps....
Ebay search "OBX 2.5 Gasket" They are a round gasket with 3 tabs/holes.You simply trim them with scissors.

I used the On3 clamps, and they worked fine. I only developed a small leak on the pass side header v-band connection, before I put the gaskets in.

So the piping from turbo to intercooler is 2.5" correct? Seems small, what kind of power can that support?
I think mine was 3"

For those that own, installed, or PERSONALLY know someone with the kit how do you/they like it? (no i read this on the internet or my brothers, wife's, friend said this... stuff)
I liked it for the money. The new owner of my kit loves it, and everyone I know locally is satisfied with them. My old kit is going 10.20's on a full weight '03 Cobra Vert with an auto...13-14psi.....70mm / .68

What kind of power did you make?
Mine made 460rwhp on 8psi....with 10 degrees timing, 11.1 AF.

It made 497 rwhp on the same boost (8psi) and 12 degrees, at 11.5 AF.....but was running out of pump, quickly....so we detuned it.

The piping on my FF from turbo to intercooler is 2.5 inch, then 3.0 from intercooler to engine.

Also,

I am using the obx 2.5 inch gaskets and some Racepartsolution clamps. finally have no leaks on the exhaust side pre turbo.

Modularspeed answered just about all the questions I would have answered. Mine spooled a little faster when I had a 5spd. And also spools instant with the auto. Mine may have spooled sooner because of the cams I have. I also had a little leak at the v-band connections. You can get good gaskets and clamps from racepartsolutions.com.
I have about 2k on my car with the turbo. I went from stage 2 cams and a vortech s-trim converted to blowthrough and making about 9-10lbs with stage 2 hi-tech cams.
Now with the mild cams and less boost (7lbs) the car feels way faster. It made 460 with the blower. I have not had it back to the dyno with the turbo. Once you feel turbo power you wont want anything else. Also be sure you read and reread modularspeeds build thread. It helped me alot!

You can simply change the piping that you are not happy with.

As I said in the other thread, I dont think the piping size really matters much when you are pressurizing air anyway.

Air volume is affected by pressure and size/volume of pipe , as in a 1" pipe flowing air @ 10psi will flow a lot more air than a 1/4" pipe flowing at 10psi.

I really want a quiet exhaust as I do cruize the car around a lot, I tought about just upgrading the 2.5" pipe to 3" to match the pipe from intercooler to engine and get a 3.5" down pipe to a Y pipe with an electric cut out then the regular 3" the rest of the way. That way it will not be stupid loud dd but I can open it @ the track for more power. That should work right?

but were measuring pressure at the intake manifold, not that pipe. I would love to a see a side by side comparison ......probably no difference

I wish i knew as well, common thinking you would think that it would need to be bigger. Air coming out of the turbo is still warmer than the air after the intercooler, cooler air is more dense so you would think the pipe coming from the turbo to intercooler would be bigger than after the intercooler....... Unless im not understanding something here

I have a..... well I have a turbo kit that has warped v-band flanges because the Chinese do not know how to weld them LOL. Of course the company has NEVER seen them leak and everything they sell fits perfect on everyones car but mine LOL!!
I am tired of fighting with them and was wondering if a ball and socket style flange would work pre-turbo? This is my first turbo car and from what I read there is more than normal exhaust pressure pre turbo. I have never had a ball and socket flange leak before unless it was really rusty or just not tight.
Thanks in advance!!

Man you have too much time on your hands lol! If you will dig a little deeper there Andy grifith you will see that I got the leaks fixed and am happy with it now. It cost me about $100 to get the leaks stopped. So add that to the price of the kit and your still way less than any other brand kit.

What size turbo you planning on using? No real need to go to 3" from turbo to intercooler when the turbo outlet is only 2.5". That piping will not be a restriction.

If you go to a bigger turbo than the 76mm and get a 3" compressor output ... then the cold-side intercooler piping is super easy to upgrade with parts from any of the million vendors. Cold-side piping is like judging a car by the color of the cup-holder.

The ON3 kit IS NOT PERFECT. The V-Bands do give alot of people problems. But it's very fixable and while annoying ... still worth the discount in price. (My personal opinion) I'm sure others like FLASHMAN will disagree. I rush-installed mine in 3 days after work and I'm sure with more time I could have avoided the leaks the first time.

There's a local Mustang making almost 700whp on his ON3 kit and I'm sure I could get there too with more boost and a better fuel system.

Been doing a lot of research on the ON3 brand turbo's....... im starting to lean towards getting their brand turbo now. A lot of the LSX guys are running them and I have yet to hear anything bad. One GM guy actually pulled one of their turbo's apart and miked up, measured, and checked out everyting and all the specs matched a big name brand companies turbo. Forgot what the name brand companies name was tough. The GM guy said everything looked to be good quality as well.

Gonna call them and see how much their 76mm ball bearing turbo's are, about $800 I hear which is about half the price of "name brand" BB turbo's. Gonna see if they make a 76mm BB billit wheel turbo as well.

Did not know that about the turbo being 2.5", I think with a good motor combo a 76mm billit wheel will get me to 800WHP and I will have spray on top to pick up any slack.

Some good info here, on3 kit is worth it IMO, just fix the small issues....I guess if you cant fix minor issues then go spend 8k on a hellion kit haha.

My 67 was 2.5 out on turbo....not sure what the 76mm turbos are...Im sure you can get 3 inch out.

My BB 67mm I got from on3 seemed very solid, I would have run it but got a deal on a billet wheel comp 67mm so decided to run that instead.

I have their 67mm bb turbo and it works good so far. I did have all the vbands replaced with race parts solution ones though. For the price, it's hard to beat on3.

Did you have this done while the pipes were off the car? Reason Im asking is, The v-bands are welded on while the pipes are in a jig so they have the correct angles. I am worried that when the new ones get welded on that they may be a little off and stuff not line back up. Any insight on that? Thanks
