Powerglide swap ?'s

I posted this in general tech but no hits. I guess im the only one doing it or nobody reads general tech. Heres my question. I took my C4 setup out and now im going glide. No real reason just kinda want the added security of a stronger transmission. I am going to get a driveshaft made locally but im not sure what flexplate to use. I already bought a JW ultra bell for a SBF to glide and got a crank adapter from a friend to run a chevorlet torque converter. Ive got a JW the wheel that I used on my c4 setup is that all I need. I know there are other bolt holes for a diff converter buy not sure if its for a glide. Also for you 94-95 guys what did yall do for a crossmember? Anyone did the swap care to name some pros and cons feel free to post them here.

I have a Glide in my 95'

I got all my stuff thru Hughes, so not sure I can be much help on the flexplate. Just make sure if you have the large/small bell to get the correct tooth count flexplate. Mine is the small bell/157 tooth.

AJE makes a nice X-member, I modified the stocker to work.

Sounds like you are on the right path, let me know if I can help in any other way.

Here is the bolt pattern for Chevrolet that you want to look for. (marked with washers) they should be 10" centre to centre, in a triangle.

Mine is a 164 tooth. You will need to make sure yours matches what's stamped on top of the bell.

Yea my flywheel is a 157 and I ordered a small bell so I should be good. I'm picking up the trans tomorrow so it shouldn't be long.

AJE did not fit my Hughes glide. You have to be mindful of the size of transbrake solenoid. We couldn't slide the cross member up far enough.

By the time we got done messing with it it wasn't worth paying for.

My flexplate is also from Pete at Hughes. He can get you taken care of if you need parts.

Driveshaft also was a bit of a headache, if you want a 1350 joint you have to change pinion flange. An 03 cobra flange works. I can post the part number if you need it.

I used my stock double hump cross member. Welded a plate
Over the stock holes and drilled a hole where needed.

A spacer between trans mount and cross member and done.

I had driveshaft specialties build my shaft.
I used a mark Williams slip yoke and mark Williams pinion flange
all 1350 joints had it in a week.

I put a th400 in mine. My converter was built to not need a crank adapter. I used my same flexplate and bell I used with my C4. Just had new holes drilled in flexplate and bought an adapter for the bell.

I didn't know about the pinion flange situation and had already provided the measurement. I really should have given you a quick call before I did all of that.

It sucks when it's a last minute problem.

I'm surprised the company that built your shaft didn't recommend
someone like mark Williams.

Call whenever u need something. Maybe I can lend a hand.

Wish I had of knowen that before. I forked out the $220 mark williams wanted for theirs.

One other thing, when selecting a drive shaft, ask them to supply the right size yoke for the glide. Not all 27 spline will fit after market glide tails. Roller bearings require micro polishing, or ordering the correct size from MW.

I should have mentioned that also. It is really the best to get the yoke directly from the transmission provider. There are a couple of different types of tail housings/bearing arrangements that require different considerations on the yoke.

I don't necessarily advise the 03 cobra part. It is cheap ~$30, and is very similar in stand-off height from the pinion to the stock pinion flange. If you are in my situation of having already measured, and having already sent the yoke to the driveshaft maker you are sort of handcuffed.

My $.02 is to use a driveshaft maker that understands fox mustangs. Just because they make 05-08driveshafts doesn't mean they are going to be able to add any value to your process other then welding the driveshaft. I went with local, instead of best choice.

The issue I am concerned about is getting a driveshaft rpm sensor in there somewhere to datalog and also to make the speedometer work. The aftermarket tailshaft/output shaft arrangement doesn't permit a speedo cable. The kits for picking up driveshaft rpm mount nicely on aftermarket pinion yokes like the mark williams one. They don't work with the 03 cobra flange.

I have to get this figured out before 2/12 because my speedometer needs to work for NJ collector registration, will document where I get with it.

Yeah sucks you got a shaft already because mark Williams offers a pinion yoke
with a collar for driveshaft speed sensor and speed.

So I assume with that speed sensor you would have to convert to an electric speedo like the newer stangs have? I miss my speedo, but I dont require one, I would like to have it back tho. Thats one of my biggest complaints about my glide swap. Since I already have the MW pinion yoke, I guess im headed in this direction as well. Please keep us posted.

I ended up going with a dynotech drive shaft in CM. no measuring from these guys needed. they specialize in fox set ups with Gm trans. And MW yokes come standard with it. Kinda liked that.

Lokar flexable here. Fits great. Next time Id spring for the lockable one tho. Huges also makes a decent one.

Mine is from Hughes, but is actually a Lokar. It works well but I had to pull the o-ring out of the part where the dipstick goes in, was way too tight. Haven't had anything foam up out of it.

The quick disconect on the transmission side makes it super easy to work with.
