Disappointed in my quarter mile times (operator error)

Hey guys. Went to the track last night for the first time with my turbo car.

1st pass: 1.79 60ft, 11.79 at 121. Leaving on a 3400rpm pill in the 2 step.

2nd pass: 2.02 60ft 11.88 at 123mph. Leaving at 5000 with major tire spin all the way through 1st gear.

I was a little frustrated to say the least. 1st pass I was shifting like grandma and bogged out of the hole.

2nd pass I got sideways in the burnout box and had to let out of it. Tires didnt get sticky at all. Then shifted with my foot on the floor bouncing off the rev limiter (6200) like a true rookie.

Crappy part about the whole night- I got to the track at 5:30. Made my first pass at 8:10 and 2nd pass at 9:30. Really unlucky in the staging lanes.

Wife tried to get some vids but the camera took a crap halfway thru the first pass. But the car did sound sweet on the 2 step.

These times were run on 10.5" 26" MT ET Streets with 13#s of pressure, running 5psi thru the hairdryer. I need to get some more passes under my belt. I know the car is capable of 10s.........

Hell last year I went 12.60 on the motor alone with a 1.75 60ft.

Corrective criticism is always appreciated.

Take the pills out for starters, try launching using the clutch and feathering it out. Or go to 6 and dump it. Only after a proper burnout. Wet the tires then do your burnout out on try cement. Don't do it in the box.

Looking pretty good, The MPH is there so the car is making good power. How was the track that night? this means so much to compare performance I would like to see a video of the burn out/stage/run before Corrective criticism

Looks real good!

Thanks, Chris

Doing the burnout out of the water is what I didnt do this time. I didnt realize until after the fact. I did last year and that is when I had my best run (without the turbo). As far as the 6 and dump it.... is that what most guys are doing? I thought the 2 step helped build boost? I could throw a big pill in like a 5000?

I dont suggest 6k and dump if a 5k launch was overkill. need to find the happy med.

I could build full 10psi at 3500 on the 2step and pulling timing while on it. Your car sounded good and thats somewhat a bad thing for once lol it should sound horrible. while on the 2step with full boost there are some seriously nasty sounds coming out lol pooping and banging... fire lol !!!

NOT my car but you can see what I mean lol....

I missed that you are only running 5psi, that is great MPH! I would defiantly do your burn out outside of the water box, 2nd gear if you have the clutch and trans for it with slicks.. also when doing the burn out make sure to keep rpms up 4500-5000K and hold steady, this will help heating the tires quicker.

6K dump will be hard on parts, try with out the 2 step for now to compare.

I am not sure if you have made further adjustments with WOT spark advance as a base it is 18* total, there is room with this. Let me know we can go over a few things.

with a mix of race gas or 100-105 octane/10-12psi/add a few degress of timing it will go 130mph + through the traps

Thanks, Chris

swap to an automatic and the car will go faster.

The mph is excellent for only 5 psi.

Hey guys thanks for the advice. Definitely have considered auto but this is a street car and I'm having fun shifting it for now. I am going to do my burnout outside of the waterbox and U will try a 2nd gear burnout. What do you guys suggest for tire pressure? Is 12- 13psi too low. It seems like higher pressure and they dont hook as well. They arent radials- they are tubed dot approved slicks.

Chris, I ended up tuning SCT and have alot of timing out of it right now because it is making gobs of power at only 5-6psi. It was making 557 hp and about 570ftlbs at only 4200rpm at 10 psi. I had boost creep problems and ended up twinning 2 Tial 38mm MVS gates and keeping her at 5psi. With the boost creep on the dyno, final pull before I switched my gate setup it made 524hp and 557ftlbs at 8psi at 5500. Stock block, so Im trying to hold her together. I spun her to 6 on first run, and 6200 on 2nd pass. Track condtions were good on first run and 2nd pass track was slick- weather cooled down a ton and there was dew all over my car so I know the track was wet. Definitely gonna make some changes next time out and I'm in the process of building an Rblock 331 stroker so I got to do some learning now.

Damm the smoke! Better get that fixed before you tear something up.

I agree with others, your mph is there for the setup on 5psi. Crank it up and 130 shouldnt be any problemb.

btw...what did the entire slip look like?

2003 v6 Turbo 4.3 stroker
6.67 @ 106mph, still tuning...
Displacement is no replacement for boost

Here's the first pass:
1.79 60ft
5.0660 330ft
7.69 1/8
95.68 1/8mph
11.79 1/4
121.74 1/4 mph

The smoke issue may or may not be resolved.
I had a crappy breather setup on the car at the time. I was using 2 pcv valves in the valve covers to a small catch can. I am now running another cheap setup that may or may not help. I am using some 1/2" mpt to 3/8 barbed fittings in the valve covers to an air compressor filter and then venting to atmosphere. Also changed the rear main seal in the car and installed a Centerforce DFX cluch. I think I was blowing oil out of the dipstick tube at the block or out of the rear main?? May be blowby but I'm trying to rule out all the possibilities.

get the 60 into the 1.5's - 1.6's. instant center, control arms. the 2nd gear burnout should start to pull the motor down before you stop heating them IMO.

what is your suspension setup? slick wont fix weight transfer.

its cool you are enjoying shifting, but are you recirculating boost through the BOV or venting it? your turbo has to respool every time you shift. an auto will be WAY faster.
