i used to run nothing but mobil one 5w-30 and a motorcraft filter. Those filters are the same exact thing as a purolater pure one filter. Its just got ford stamped on it. So ill be sticking with that, but after some research im finally switching to red line 30w race oil

That's what im trying to figure out. I have a new dart 363 from fordstrokers and it has a pt88 turbo on it so I need to know a good start up oil then a oil from then on to use. I'm going to start it without the turbo first.

10W30 synthetic.
I figure with a turbo, you want something that is heat stable since it is running thru those superhot bearings

I think the 10w30 synthetic is a great choice cause it drains easy.

I have run 15w40 and 20w50 in my car for the last 2 years when applicable, but after doing some research I'm not sure thicker oil is better because thinner oil drains faster/better/easier. This is good for oil trying to get from the heads to the bearings and getting the oil out of ur turbo. I figured thinner oil was bad cause it breaks down easier with the added heat.

What are your bearing clearances? I run 10w30. Running 20w-50 is like pushing molasses through a straw, unless you have wide bearing clearances it isn't needed.

Anybody run thinner weights with a stock high mileage block? I have 164k and was wondering about 5w30, 10w30 or 10w40.

I run what is exactly on my oil cap. You dont need anything special or made with gold. I think it is 5w20 for me.

I think it should be said for newbs that the needs of a pushrod 5.0 and a modular 4.6 are extremely different as far as oiling goes.

as said before bearing clearance plays a big part into it. I use vr1 20-50.

2001 4.6 here.
right now i use castrol syntec 0w-30. its made in germany and has a true synthetic base oil in it, not like american synthetics where they can call hydrocracked crude a synthetic. its on the thicker side of 30 weight at operating temp yet has great cold flow. only catch is its only at pep boys and autozone.

mobil 0w40 is also a true synthetic and meets bmw, vw, audi, opel, and mercedes specs but the mobil also meets porsche's spec. audi and vw turbo guys swear by the german castrol and mobil. and theres almost always a 5quarts and filter deal on both of them. great oils for the price @~$5 a quart vs ~7 a quart for amsoil, redline.
alot of guys also use rotella 10w30 and 15w40.

if you want to know more about oil this site has more than you would ever want to know about oil.

Reed at Work turbochargers recommended Brad Penn. It's harder to find but he said it doesn't break down as easily as Mobil 1. He also recommended the Valvoline VR1.
