Fitting a PT4788 to a B&G Fox Kit

Last time at the dyno I ran out of turbo with my new motor from DiSomma racing engines and my PT78. It wouldn't make more then 17 psi before opening the waste gates. We kept messing with it and ended up blowing smoke out of the downpipe. I later discovered I damaged the turbo badly by over spinning it.

I shipped Brian my passenger header and downpipe to make the changes.

The PT4788 was shipped directly to Brian who had the exhaust housing coated for me and set out to get my passenger header and upper down pipe to fit.

Brian replaced the collector with a 3 inch and replaced the 2.5 inch T4 flange with one with a 3 inch opening so it no longer necks down. The driver's side 2.5 is transitioned into the 3 inch collector. Brian's theory is that despite that neck down helping on a smaller motor by making exhaust build velocity and the turbo subsequently spool faster, it would have been a bottleneck in my hotside with the amount of power I'm hoping to make.

I have the header mocked up and the turbo bolted on, that part seems fine. I clocked both sides of the turbo. The downpipe I got close to bolting on, but was having trouble maneuvering it. I have a friend coming by tomorrow so we will finish it then. The PT4788 is quite a bit heaver then the PT78 and hard to move on your own.

I also have to order a new drain flange, although the bolt holes just about line up on the one from the PT78, the flange barely covers the drain hole and I fear leaking.

I'm hoping to get over 25 psi out of this turbo into the new motor. Game on.

I have had this bookmarked for probably 6 months LOL.

Great write-up. How did it end up working? (Im guessing pretty good by the times in your sig)

B&G had the parts done before sending them back. The coating stayed "ok". I think I was doing too much work around it before it was completely cured.

The screen had to come off. Was costing 150 rwhp on the dyno.

The car made 929 rwhp at 6950 rpm with an Accel dual sync before breaking up. I now have a modded msd distributor and a crank trigger and it spins to 7800 and makes another couple pounds if boost. If you carry the math out on the mph it is making close to 1000 rwhp.

It is making about 26 psi. Brian feels that the $200 intercooler is the limiting factor. I have been tasked with measuring pressure drop across the intercooler. I will be doing that in august and plan to stop at B&G on my way home from Ohio NMRA and have work with them to shoehorn a slightly thicker, much more efficient Garret cored intercooler in there.

The core itself is over $500 but that is still cheaper then a bigger turbo or other mods.

I am working in a powerglide swap currently, I broke the c4 for the second time this season.

Good looking car bud, it is minitubbed yet? I'm planning to have mine minitubbed early next year so I can put a 335/17 drag radial on it.

I don't yet plan to do mini-tubs.

I think I'm going to do the 25.5 cage update this winter.

The car works on 275's, not sure I "need" a mini-tub right now.

My other project is going to be upgrading electronics to the MSD Grid setup and setting it all up behind the dashboard, cleaning up the interior.

Yeah and it's pretty cool you do it on a 275. I'm doing it for so for the fact I love the way it looks plus I always plan to run the car on a 17'' drag radial. Are you running a 14 point right now or a 25.5 that needs to be updated?

It is 8.50 legal now. Mostly moly, some mild from the original 8 pt bar. Joey Gambino built it (down in Toms River). Going to have him do the rest of the work. Very meticulous.

LOL I was just going to ask you how that C4 was holding up to those times. I had the same issues. I swapped in a Pro mod style glide. Bullet proof trans to say the least. But Im not sure I like it yet. I think I shoulda done a 400. I drive mine on the street regularly and I miss being able to do a first to second pull, and not end up over 100mph

That's cool man. I'm lucky to have a really good friend that builds a lot of high horspower turbo cars, including quite a few outlaw 10.5 cars. I just have a 4 point chromoly roll bar in the car right now and not sure what the local track will let me get away with having that in there. I'm sure I'll eventually have to put more cage in the car though I hate too cut up my street car.

Yes, I am also doing a pro mod glide. I just hate the car being down all the time.

I could get my hands on a t400 but I just want to be done with changes.

Good question. I'm about to order my stuff and going with the twin Bosch 044's and I'm using a bigger pickup in the stock location. So I'm curious to see what setup he is using too.

Glenn's performance 1450 hp kit. I recently had Aeromotive refresh the Eliminator pump to the newest standard.

Sleeper sumped tank, -10 feed, -8 return, A1000 regulator, fuel cooler. I followed Glenn's advice and plumbed the cooler in when we did it and I have never had an issue.

Car's looking and running well Mike. BTW, sorry I never mentioned it, but congrats on the ATCO win! Hope OH goes well for ya as well. Maybe see you again in Bradenton next spring.

I have a new billet-wheel 67 being built by Precision after injesting "something" this past springtime after a race at SGMP . I "hope" to finally build a motor for it this winter
