E303 cam & turbo

im building a 351w with trick flow heads ported. holley systemax intake with a turbonetics 78mm i know the E 303 cam is good for a turbo set up but im wondering what kind of power it will make.im going to habe 3 tunes on the car.street 550 625 and final tune with race gas 700+ just wondering if anyone know what kind of power that cam will make or if its to small....i know some people use the stock cam so i know the E303 cam cant be to bad.

i not sure how good the e cam will do in your 351.
might cost a little more but the best thing to do is call up comp cams and tell them exactly what you have and what you want to make and they will give you the best cam for your car.

Re: E303 cam & turbo

I too say go custom in this situation. It is not the E will be horrible, it is just that it works so well with less cubes.

I wouldn't run a custom cam unless I had a Dart/Boss/WP block. Just pick up a used F cam and call it a day.

F cam is the better choice when you consider price, performance, sound and feedback. I run 1 too.

The F cam is the cam from FMS for boosted applications. I am not sure why the E cam seems to keep coming up as the one to get because if buying a letter cam for a boosted car then it should be a no brainer to go with the F. But you are talking about running one in a engine with ~50 more cubes so it becomes far from the optimal cam. Sure they will make power, heck people with 302s and B cams make good power numbers even though it is far from optimal for that application.

the biggest question is what do you want the car for. is it a street car that you want to see how much hp it makes on the dyno. or is it a race car that you plan on taking to the track and going fast.

I think the stated HP goals in the first post give a decent idea of what the car will be used for. No one else has asked this but is this 351 block even one that will work with a hydraulic roller cam without special lifters?

yes it is.its F4TE block which is a roller block.its not going to see alot of track time just because i hate the track.lol but it will be something that i want to make [email protected] the wheels with race gas.so like i said before 550 street tune then 2nd tune around 625 or so and 3rd tune race gas around 700.

If you already have the E and want to save some money then go for it. But in the grand scheme of things you are talking what a $200 savings? Personally I'd rather have something spec'd for boost and for my combo in general.

ANY cam will "work" with a turbo, but what cam works best is another thing.

if you just want hp on the dyno then use what ever cam you have and turn up the boost. then set it at 8 to 10psi for you normal tune

If they don't then could he not use the upper from one and bolt it onto a ford truck lower?

nope because the 5.8 truck is more like the 5.0 car setup and not the 5.0 truck which is like the holley/saleen setup

you might wanna start thinking of a different intake as $300+ for the adapters is lot as he can sell his existing intake and buy something like the victor 5.8

I would worry about matching your cam to your valve springs before anything. Seat pressure and open pressure should be matched so that you dont end up having top end problems down the road.

The E303 will work, but you are leaving power on the table especially is you are not concerned with smog testing or making a low rpm motor. You can run 1.7 RRs to get more lift, but really that cam is a pretty mild cam and isn't even a dual pattern grind so you could probably match up a better cam for your setup. 498" lift is not much at all IMHO. Here are the full specs:

http://www.fordracingparts.com/download/charts/85.pdf

I actually switched from a E303 to a Stage 2 TFS cam which has a grind that is designed specifically for our heads. Without a doubt a much better cam for the TFS heads especially with added displacement. I cannot remember which Comp springs that I used but I got the springs perfect with some shims and this thing has next to no valve train noise! Just sounds like a motor should. It was worth all the time and effort to get it dialed in.

you need a better intake as that truck lower has no business on a 351W with a 78mm shootimg for that type of power. you can fit 315s on a 8" wheel doesn't mean its the thing to do. pk
