Fox lx intercooler help

I have been on here lurking looking and finding nothing on this.

I have a 1993 lx coupe with AC.... I am about finished up with the installation of a BG turbo kit and have run into a bit of a snag with the mounting of the intercooler. Brian of BG recommended tilting out the top of the intercooler into the bumper itself so that I could get a bit more room to play with, and that has seemed to help quite a bit. However, I am trying not to trim the bumper cover as I am trying to keep this car looking like a somewhat stock 66000 mile lx coupe.

Any photos or insight would be very much appreciated at this point. I have been mounting and remounting the damn intercooler and the front bumper for the last two nights and want to get this damn thing finished up!!!

Thanks in advance,

Sean

I felt this way also on my 28000 mile coupe but to I face the facts that intercooler is huge and the bumper is not! I did exactly what bryan said too and it did help but trimming is necesary! I used blue masking tape with a dremel tool and cutoff wheel and it worked great!

Any chance that you have any final photos of the front of your car after the intercooler install?

Thanks for the kind words......

Every LX I have every see always looked pretty chopped up, if looks are of key concern and you dont wanna cut up your bumper cover than maybe get a smaller intercooler.

Been out of the game since 2011.. looking to get back in in 2019

That is exactly what I am thinking about doing.

I am running a stock motor other than the turbo and fuel. I am thinking that a much smaller intercooler will be fine for my 500 hp goal.

I agree, there is not a whole lot on the bottom of the front bumper and when it is cut up it can look pretty poorly performed.

I cut our 91 coupe to make ome fit and i couldn't stand it. I would run meth before i cut another bumper. I ended up with a A/W cooler in the left front fender, no cutting.

john

We also mad over 570whp with no intercooler at all.

Is a intercooler really needed for a street car looking to make around 400 rwhp with a stock short block,GT40 heads and 42lb injectors and a 255lph pump?..Also does B&G offer a kit without an intercooler?..Also i always see turbo's with intercoolers if you dont run one how is it then piped??

You can get away without an intercooler but you typically make a lot more power with one. You would just run a pipe directly from the turbo to the intake if you chose not to run one.

I think you may have more trouble with detonation without it though.

We removed the intercooler because the car ran too hot with it, air flow to the radiator was a problem, we also had working a/c and live in Florida. You do have to change your tune for it. Plus on the street heat soak is a problem with a/a coolers. That's when a meth kit would be the best of both. Unless you want to...

I cut out the little "teeth" things that hold the LX bumper opening together. Then I screwed the top part of the opening into the bumper and then drilled a few small holes in the inside part of the bottom and zip tied the inside edges together. This created a bigger mouth for the intercooler and made more space. Came out looking nice.

Thanks for all the input!!! It is great to hear I am not the only one with this problem. I really would like to stay air to air. This is a street car, that I will commute with on nice days and maybe run down the track a couple of time s a year. The car is very understated and showing a giant intercooler is just not in the cards for me. I am trying to keep the engine compartment as original as I can without cutting or modifying too much. I want people to look in there and other than the turbo, not be able to tell the difference if they dont know what they are looking for.

Erich, thanks for the pics!!! I like your idea and the bumper itself looks good, not all hacked up lie a lot of them I have seen. One question though, is your intercooler offset to the driver side?

I picked up the evo intercooler last night and mocked it up in there. The end caps tilt in where the piping hooks up just enough that I think it is going to be much less cutting. The core is almost the exact same size as the one that I got with the kit, its just a bit narrower and much much nicer!!

Ill post some pics if I ever get the damn thing put together =)

Thanks again

It is offset to the drivers side. I think that is to allow for outlet onthe top to have a little more room. This IC is two in from the bottom, one out from the top passenger side. Made by HP in New Mexico.

Erich, can you give details about your A/A intercooler? core dimensions and inlet/outlet tube size? power/airflow rating?

I cut my bumper cover then cut it some more. I don't mind though, I think it looks awesome.

I'm not a magazine racer, my car is actually fast.
I also have a Honda civic but, mine has a bigger, uglier driver.

are u guys running into problems because the core is too thick or because the intercooler is too large overall? i was planning on running a 4 inch core behind my lx bumper. Is that a pipe dream, even with an aftermarket bumper support?
