Why is boost creep a bad thing??

My car creeps about 2psi, was wondering why thats a bad thing though?
I always hear people worrying about it but I dont see why its an issue.

That means the wastegate is not properly doing it's job in regulating boost. This means that while mid summer temps may creep 1-2 psi, cooler temps could creep more. For those already maxing out their fuel system or running on the ragged edge....it could be very bad. For those with the ability to tune several psi past their base tune with the ability to lay down more power...it's no big deal.

Thats kinda what I figured, my car was tuned with the creep so im not too worried about it. I am about to run the WG into the DP soon and assume its gonna make it a bit worse

Yeah, it may get a little worse...but as long as your tune can handle it...it shouldn't matter much. Too much however means you have excess back pressure and can be bad on the turbo's bearings.

My car was initially tuned with the creep, but I'm getting it sorted out now. By getting the creep fixed, I'm hoping to introduce more boost down low, not just on the top end. For example, if I have a 10# spring in the wastegate, but it creeps to 12#, it's only getting the power benefit of that 12#'s in the upper rpm ranges where it creeps. If I'm ok with running 12#'s (which I am) it'd be better for boost to immediately jump to 12, rather than start at 10 and work it's way up to 10. It'll result in more torque. My case was a little more extreme as my 10# spring was creeping to almost 15. I've got the issue resolved and am now going to use a boost controller to bring it to 14 or so right outta the gate. The negative aspects are, as Millhouse said, the inconsistency.

you might need a bigger wastegate. I have a 38mm set for 7psi and i can creep to 9.5 psi..but with megasquirt i have it set for boost cut if it goes to 10. and i have a bin for 10 psi incase it went that high i have it set REAL safe there just in case.

Sick96gt it can lead to a blown engine if you are running out of injector or you have too small of a pump or your duty cycle is too hight at the top which would make you run out of fuel which would make you lean out and cause a blow engine or headgasket.

My car had a bit of creep as well. While making a pass it popped a headgasket, pressurized the cooling system blowing off the lower rad hose. Obviously tires got wet and I went thru the trap sideways at 129.6 mph. Missed the end of the wall by about 25ft. I was lucky I was in the right lane cause I went thru a field on the right side of the track. I came thru ok, car was ok, my pants were NOT ok. A bit of creep could have a big effect. What if happened to me on the street? Could have died or killed someone else.

I have since swapped gates, an fittings / braided stainless rad hoses and had a cage/harnesses installed.

True story, happened at Tri-state raceway Nov. 07.
