Best gear for a 5spd 96 Cobra vert?

I searched and see alot of advise for a 3:27 on fox bodies, but very little info on my specific car (fat a**). Car made 447rwhp and then ran a 12.44 @ 115.5mph on 6-8psi my only trip to the strip with the current 4:10 gear.

So what would be ideal gear in this car as-is and also if I build a motor later and run 15-18psi. Planing on staying 5spd.

Mods in signature.

What is the rpm you are going through the traps? What is your rpm threshold (top rpm you care to spin at)? I would say a 3.55 or 3.73 would be perfect for you since you have a 4v car. This might help with spool time in first gear. What are your 60' they will tell a lot too.

It's a 4valve, so probably 65-6800rpm max. 60' is 1.81. Anyone have any idea how much I can hope to gain? Also is a two-step a big help at the strip?

I vote for 3.55s but Im VERY bias lol

YES a very big help IF you can hook.. Only running 6-8 psi you should be able to build FULL boost and launch off the 2 step. IF you have a way to pull timing on the 2step it will help build boost too and it can do it at lower rpm

example...mine is a stock pushrod motor but by pulling 2* on the 2 step I could build full boost (10psi) and still launch at my 3500 rpm.. I could get the 10 psi IF I set the 2step higher but then my launch rpm was "off"

I went from a 1.88 to a 1.63 60'

NEVER do business with Sam Rivera AKA Sam Wilson.

What is the best 2-step to buy to build boost at the line, and any other suggestions on the gear?

I used a MSD digital 6+ ign box it has a built in 2step and a timing retard. it was nice having all 3 in one box but you can get pretty much any one of them you want from MSD.

I do like 3.27's for turbo cars they work GREAT!! However I would NOT go lower then 3.55's. with that tire your looking at "only" 5300 rpm at 115 with 3.55s and 4800ish with 3.27s.. 3.73s would be more in your rpm range but I have never been a fan of higher gears with turbos.

I agree 100% but I think you may be attributing too much torque to the small 4v.

My buddy has 4.30's on his 98 cobra and that thing feels EXACTLY like my 5.0 with 3.73's. If I would lower my rear to 3.55's or 3.27's I wouldn't go below 3.73 with a 4v. I know that changing gears repeatedly is a bitch but the early 4v isn't even working at 5300 with your 3.55's. 5800 though for the jump to 3.73's would probably put the car in a much better power curve.

I would expect a MPH jump with the 3.73's too. Probably put you at 118 or more.

i've installed the 3.27 and i'm going twin turbo soon but i've also thought about 3.08s to take some of the steepness out of first and allow me to get more time in that gear

Really? I just wouldn't think that a N/A car that likes 4.30's would want to drop that much.

I mean the 5.0 guys like 3.73's and then drop basically .5 to 3.27's so I figured a similar drop would be in order for the smaller motor, just from a higher starting point.

Hey guy there you go, someone with the experience, maybe 3.27's are the ticket.

Is there anyone that has before and after 1/4 mile times with a change of gear being the only difference?

yeah i went 13.1 at 106.xx with 4.10s...12.90s at 109-110mph with 4.30s and 12.70s at 111-112 with 4.56s and i never got a clean run with those gears so i left some trap speed on the table
