strange heater problem......

when i start the car to get it warmed up and turn the heater on it gets really hot(almost to the notch past the "L" on the normal gauge...... and the heater blows cold..... once i start driving it cools back down and then starts blowing hot like its supposed to......

any ideas why this is happening? its annoying becuase id liek thecar to be warm for my son before i put him in there....

thanks!!!

Might be a bad heater core. Not a fun job if it is.

Since the temp gauge is fluctuating, that tells me that coolant isn't flowing correctly somewhere

It's could very well be a blown head gasket.

My Guess is the thermostat, or a Bad Rad. If you don't smell coolant (Sweet Smell), then it could be much worse like the head gasket.
