Rear Axle Weight? Why? Does Anyone know?

My 1984 3.8 has a wierd looking weight hanging off of the center section of the rear axle. It is just behind where the drive shaft attaches to the center section. It is hanging there by two bushings. Does anyone know why it is there? I'm tempted to take it off just to see if it does anything wierd..
Anyone have a clue?
Thanks

Its a dampener. Search "Dog bone" you'll find references to it.
