Question Ticking/Knocking 96 3.8 ???

OK, Im looking at a 96 Convertible auto car for my wife. It has the v6 motor. A friend of mine is selling it cheap, like 2500 dollars. It is in good shape, on 70,000 miles. Here is the problem.
There is a knocking sound coming from the motor. When I started up the car it wasnt doing it at all. I reved it up to about 2500 or maybe like 3000 rpm's and thats when the sound starts. Its almost like a clunk more than a tick tick. The motor doesnt shake at all, its not exhaust. This guy took it to a mechanic who said it was the camhaft after listening to it for a few seconds, but i doubt he could really diagnose it that fast, especially without really looking at it. Im just looking for ideas of what it might be. I just dont want it to be bottom end crank issues. Like I said, it wouldnt do it just idling. No check engine lights. any help is appreciated.

could be a bering, it could be a lifter or an exhaust leak, try and seafoam the car and see if any smoke comes out of the manifolds, take off the oil filter and drain just the oil filter and top it off with ATF and run a set of techron gas through it to see if its a sticking lifter for about 500 miles, if not then its something else

i would still get the car, if something is seriously wrong with the motor you could always get a 4.2 V-6 out of an f150 and use your upper intake ontop of the 4.2 and everything else will bolt right up
