1996 3.8l Camshaft synchronizer help

i just helped a friend swap a 3.8l engine in his car and now i cant get it to run good. It seems to be a timing issue . I have the sychronizer tool but did not get to mark the original location . I have tried moving it a couple of teeth both ways and has not helped. The car has a build date in the door of 7-95.. So does that mean its setup for the 95 or 96 sychronizer installation . there seems to be more thenn one procedure for timing a 3.8l ...FML Any help would be appreciated

Try v6power.net. BTW if you swapped the engine why would the timing be off in the first place? I'm guessing it's not a junkyard motor but a rebuild?
