2001 mustang 3.8 alternator woes
I need some help, my daughter has a 01 3.8 mustang. She called me yesterday saying the battery gauges was bottoming out and then getting normal. I told her to stop by the local auto zone and they would tell her if it was the alternator or not. They hooked it up and told her the alternator was bad and a new one was $224
I told her to get it to the house. I pulled her alt and while doing so the wires in the plug came apart. So I took it to a very reputable shop here locally and had them take a look. They called me told me they found some problems and they could make it like new for $84 and a new plug would run $15.00 so I told them to fix it and that I wanted the plug. I got the plug and it had 3 wires and hers only had two, I pulled the gren wire off from the same hole that is blank on the original one and spliced the plug in today and got her running, 10 minutes later she was back with the gauge past L in the normal. I pulled the wiring back apart and made sure there was a good connection, 10 minutes later the same thing
I am pretty darn sure the alternator shop didnt send me home with a junk piece, they are kind family owned folks, thats why I went there. It does have a warranty but will be very embarrassed if I take it to him and it is fine.
Anybody ever had this issue, what was the fix?
Thanks for any help you can give.
